I found a Mod.70 Stainless, long action, CRF, in a local shop. It is chambered in .300 Weatherby, 26" barrel, light grey fiberglass stock. This rifle appears to be in new condition. The price is $870.00. Is this a fair price ? Don't know why it is up for sell. What do I need to look for to make sure nothing is wrong with the rifle ? Jim

Good price, the .300 Weatherby was relatively scarce....stock sounds aftermarket if it is light grey.

I THINK THAT SOUNDS QUITE HIGH, SCARCITY DOES NOT ALWAYS MEAN HIGH PRICE, THERE HAS T BE DEMAND. i had a 300 weatherby sporter controlled round feed model 70 classic wood blued like new and it took me a month to sell it for $625....just my experience. lenny

$870.00 seems high to me too......unless it were a lefty......
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

I'd never sell mine for $870! Those are very rare, not just a little rare. And mine shoots great!

The 300 WBY is made on the true magnum length action, which makes it a valuable donor. The stainless makes it doubly scarce. $870 is no bargain, but if you could get it for less than $800, you would not be leaving too much on the table.

You know utah when the op first started this thread I thought about telling a story about one I let get away. It was one you and I would appreciate (a lefty in 300 wby). The damn thing sat around locally for about a year and finally had a reduction in price to about $600.00 (late 90's I think)....Anyway, I already had a great 300 wby custom built on the m1917 platform and didn't need a left hand SS model 70. Man I still kick myelf in the azz for letting that one go....

Seems a little high, book is around $700 for it, but you're probably not going to get it for that do to the scarcity.

That's a good rifle...the cartridge is among the best of its' type...that particular model is pretty scarce and not easy to find.It is no longer made. It will last a lifetime and outlast all of us...if you really want/need it,cut the best deal you can, grab it, and run like hell. I would rather be out $50 bucks extra than suffer from the terrible malaise of "I missed it due to Analysis Paralysis".
The 280 Remington is overbore.
The 7 Rem Mag is over bore.

Maybe $50 to $100 high but a SS CRF mag length M70 is a good grab at any rate. When barrel change time comes around (needed or wanted) that long action has many possibilities. Buy the rifle and enjoy it.

See if you can find out what stock it is. That could make a big difference. If it's a good, aftermarket stock, you could justify a few extra bucks. I bought a used New Haven M-70, .300 Ultra Mag Stainless Classic with Tupperware stock, 3-9x40 Nikon Buckmaster in Leupold rings and bases for $700. The gun shows little wear and is a donor for a .404J project. http://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/topics/6630614/10This gives you an idea of the market for used M-70's. DF Edited to add, I sold the Nikon Buckmaster for $125, bringing the gun price down to $575.

Uh, are there any Custom Shop markings on it? The Sporting Sharpshooters did come with grey McMillan stocks at one time...
