javman - I have NO wish to derail your thread. I would like to ADD to it a question. I am not familiar with Cerakote OR Gunkote so could someone describe both AND.... how did Armaloy compare? I HAD a SW M19 that was Armloyed (?) and FOOLISHLY traded it off. However I did get my first 300 WM in trade BUT still wish I had that 19.

jwall,
Well Cerakote is a ceramic based finish that makes any metal and or polymer plastic pretty much rust/scratch resistant and comes in 120 different colors. Self lubricating.
Gunkote makes a few different products but makes a ceramic based one to but only comes in 6 or 7 basic colors.
Armaloy is a chromium based product and comes in only in shade that I know of.

javman - thanks - I've been on the sideline of the gun industry for a few yrs and these are some of the new things I don't know about.
That armaloy 19 was SWEET, and the treatment was pretty tuff. I never saw it crack or scratch.
Thanks for your answers. Now I would like to know which is better and how they are ranked. Probably like a lot of other things by personal preference.

jwall,
I'm leaning towards the cerakote myself and if you google NIC Industries you can see all the cool applications they have. They make an air dry component, a powder kote one and of course the ceramic based one which seems to out last gunkote 7 times over.

Jerry You are right about that Armaloy being tough.I had a revolver done in that stuff and carried it in some real wet and nasty conditions.Never rusted and I dropped in on a rock once and could not tell where it hit. That would be my first choice.

Do you or anyone else know IF armaloy is still available? Thanks Jerry

Another option is Birdsong's Black T finish. It seems to be highly regarded. http://www.black-t.com/
Exquisitely turdlike in all of his many manifestations!!

+1 on the Birdsong Black T finish.
I had a heavy varmint rifle done with this finish and I am very pleased. I would use them again without hesitation.

Huntz - I have NO opinion of the other finishes listed here.
Having had an Armaloy K 19, I know about it and I LIKE it and I can TOO recommend it. You had good service out of it.
The Armaloy finish is/was a battleship grey in appearance, similar to some satin nickel finishes I've seen.

This is a Teflon S finish which I really like. I have a cerakote also which I like. Both seem to hold up well under extreme conditions.
