Just picked up a Remington 7600 carbine in 30.06 for a great price. It has open sights and I want to scope it. I hunt out of a permanent treestand with very little sun. I need scope/mounts/ring recommendations. I am thinking of a Leopold VXIII 2.5 x8, but I have no idea on rings and bases.

I think you are limited to a 1 peice Leupold style base with windage rear, rings of your choice.

Looks to be plenty of choices.

The weaver one piece base with Weaver rings is hell for stout. I gave up on the Leupold windage adjustable bases after I had a 35 Whelen walk a scope out of the rear base.

You should consider an Aimpoint for that 7600. I fell into a 7600 in 30-06 and I am putting an Aimpoint on it, and I am going to feed it Big Greens 180 gr RN Corelokts. I got a late Northern Maine Deer hunt lined up and I am going to go Benoit on this one, The Aimpoint is weill my eyes can't adjust to a peep sight anymore.

The Benoits are using scopes now.:)
Have hunted northern Maine, and there are clearcuts where you can shoot a long way- A scope comes in handy, also for threading a bullet through brush.
In several years of hunting Maine, NH and Vermont, never knew of a hard core deer hunter using an Aimpoint.

I have a Warne one pice base and Burris Signature Zee rings on my 7600. I have two rifles with DNZ mounts and I like them too. I like my Leupold scopes with their post & duplex reticle and heavy duplex. A 2.5x8 is a good scope. My son has one with the post & duplex reticle on his 760 30-06. A 4x with the post & duplex or heavy duplex is a good choice for dim light.

I have a Leupold 4X on my 760 carbine (.308). Sighted in 2-inches high at 100 yards. Simple, and magnification is plenty out to 200+ yards. It's mounted on a one-piece Leupold base with dovetail ring in the front and windage adjustable ring in the rear. Great setup.

My Father, who was not a serious deer hunter, owned a 760 carbine in 30-06 and thought that it was the best New England whitetail rifle available at the time, mid-1950s. His had a Weaver K3 with a PCH reticle mounted. If I was going to scope a 760/7600, it would be with a VX2 2-7x33 with a heavy duplex reticle.

My "cached in New England" still-hunting deer rifle, a Winchester 100 Carbine in 308, has a Vari-X IIc 2-7x33 Shotgun scope mounted in a Weaver 1-piece alloy base and Warne QR rings.

I would go with a 2x7 with a duplex, heavy or reg. My dad owned a 760 '06 that wore a Redfield widefield 2x7 and he later mounted it on his M100 .308. Both worked well in the U.P. which is much akin to New England style hunting.

Well I got my 7600 sighted in today, The aim point works great. I zeroed in for 100 yards and then went and put some targets out at various ranges and did some snap shooting. Made good solid hits were I wanted the bullets to go. I think its going to be very effective for the hunting I have in mind.

I put a 1.5x5 on my Carbine. It's perfect for that rifle and a better choice than my 2.5x8. Small gun needs a small scope to look and handle well.

Plain old Weaver base with good rings is perfect.

Super Cub, you have some really nice rifles and that one is a beauty. I had a 1x4 Leupold on my 7600. Never did warm up to it and gave it to my son and he has it on a Marlin 336. One of the things I didn't like about that scope is I use Butler Creek lens caps and I had to move my left hand back to flip it up. For me a longer scope is best but that's why there are so many to choose from.

One of my all time favorite scopes is the VX-3 2.5-8x36mm.
I ended up trying the VX-3 1.75-6x32mm on my 1895 Guide gun and man, this scope is bright!

FWIW, I do shoot this rifle out to 300 yds and 6x is more than enough to get me there.

I have a few 760/7600's in carbine and regular lengths. I like the 2-7X and 2.5-8X Leupolds on the long rifles but for the carbines I prefer the 1.5-5X size scope. Same reasons as given by Super Cub.

I have one 7600 carbine in 35Rem with a 1-4X Leupold shotgun scope. The heavy duplex is perfect for the swamps in WI and MI that I frequent. Just another option to consider.

Quick detach Weaver rings/base is all you need.

The difference between a Remington 7600 rifle and carbine is 3.5" of barrel length, 22" vs. 18.5". To me, that makes the carbine shorter or handier, but not appreciably "smaller". Any weight that you would save by using the shorter 1.5-5x20 in lieu of either the 2-7x33 or 2.5-8x36 would likely be offset by removing the superfluous open sights and you'd gain the better light transmission of the larger objective lens.

Per Leupold, the difference in weight between a 1.5-5x20 and 2-7x33 is 0.6 ounces and the difference in length is 1.8". I doubt that the weight difference of 0.6 ounces would be noticeable and the 1.8" length difference would be more of an esthetic factor than a practical factor.

Or at least that is my take on the issue.
