I've been thinking about shooting metallic rifle silhouette but don't know much about it, I was wondering what a Good caliber would be? whould a .222 rem be a good choice?

Go to the nearest match to you and see what they are using.

The .222 while good in it's day has been replaced by the 223.

You might want to visit steelchickens.com.

I'm pretty sure both the .222 and .223 are underpowered. A cartridge needs enough energy to knock down the rams at 500 meters. Cartridges like the .308 Win, 7mm-08, .260 rem have been the standards. David Tubb won one year with a .243 win loaded with heavy bullets (107 Sierra's) and commented that it wasn't knocking down rams reliably.

Regardless, thanks to whoever was responsible. It makes a helluva hunting round as well! laugh

243 is bare minimum. 222 or 223 wouldnt' even come close. IIRC Tubb lost some ram hits to the 243 that were not perfect. IE hit but did not knock down.

I'd think personally that about a 260 would be minimum and 7x08 could be about ideal but thats just surmising and from what I've read.

.22 centerfires are not allowed at some silhouette ranges. I believe there is a sign to that effect at the NRA's Whittington Center range

Always wondered what a 22-250 driving 90 jlks might do, but Tubb had issues with the 243 and 107s IIRC.

Stumbled on to a silhouette match at our Tucson range a while back, every competitor was running a .260 with 140's

270 loaded with 135 SMKs over IMR 4064 will completely flip a ram if hit a little high on the back.

Very tough bullet with 4064 in my 10 lb. rifle is very mild in the recoil department.

284.
