336 Sporting Carbine .35 Rem, 20" bl, 3/4 mag, pistol grip, non-micro groove, looks factory-gloss finish, sn# under the lever: L 18006. Very good shape, hang tag, no box. Is f-d&t, pre-cross bolt safety. Any idea when mfg, ballpark value? Thanks, Rick

L would be 1954, see here: http://armscollectors.com/sn/marlinlookup.php

Value depends on where location and buyer. Some parts of the country around $200, others $350+.

There is a 336 texan at www.griffinhowe.com now for $325.

I've seen them in pawn shops for $200 otd.

I don't think that an early 336 SC would probably have had a gloss finish. My 1958 vintage 336 SC has a dull oil finish, while my 1958 SN 336 SD has a semi-gloss finish, but nothing as glossy as the new 336s.

According to Murray's book, an L prefixed 336 SC would have been a 1954 production and should have the following characteristics:

Barrel: 20" with ballard type rifling, special smokeless steel.
Magazine: 2/3s the length of the barrel.
Stock: Oil finished walnut with a pistol grip cap and white line spacer between the grip cap and buttplate.
Forearm: Oil finished walnut with steel forearm cap.
Sights: Open, d&t for a receiver sight on the left side of the reciever, but not d&t on the top of the receiver. Murray reports that "By 1960 - Frame drilled and tapped fortop mount scope bases.". I have a couple of "R" pre-fixed 336s that appear to have come factory d&t, so it appears that Murray's investigation didn't determine exactly why Marlin started to d&t for scope bases.

Value, depending on condition should be between $225 and $325. I recently gave $360 for a really outstanding deluxe 336 Sporting Carbine with the box and a B&L Balvar5A.

'Sounds like a great candidate for a Nonneman conversion to 356.

Thank you for the responces, good info. That conversion sounds real interesting. I was thinking about converting a 99 to 358, but this looks like a good possibility, I just would not like to mess up the value of a nice 336 SC, however, I'm in to this one at a good price, food for thought, thanks again

My '51 vintage M336SC 35 Rem. is as-issued, no nasty holes in the receiver. As others mentioned, it has a "dull" oil-like finish on the wood that serves it very well.

Paid around $200 for mine a few years back, in about 90% condition. They aren't all that rare, expensive nor collectible, so might make a good candidate for what you have in mind. The 35 Rem. bolt face will have to be opened to .473 from .460 and the 358 is a tad longer and fatter, if not mistaken, but it's probably doable.

I always wanted one 'cause an elderly uncle had one in 32 Special years ago and I thought it looked good and handled well, back when I was a kid. When I found mine, just had to have it.

The little critter is more accurate than anything that old or squatty should oughta be, has the absolute best trigger I've ever encountered on any lever gun and now wears a receiver sight which suits it fine.

If three or more people think you're a dimwit, chances are at least one of them is right.
