I ran across a 336 today in a local pawn shop that was a 300 Savage!! I never know these were made. The rollmark on the barrel said it was a limited edition. It had the old impressed checkering. I don't believe it had the hammer/crossbolt safety. It was a little rough, and they were asking $275, but I was informed I could get a "deal".
Does anyone know anything about a 336 in 300 Savage??
Thanks, Steve

Are you sure it wasn't a Savage 99?

NEGATIVE! It was a Marlin 336. If it was a Model 99, I would have already bought it.

I have heard of a proto-type 336 in 250 Savage, but never 300 Savage. It could be OK, since 336s are safely converted from 30-30 to 307 and 35 to 356 by MO 'smith Regan Nonneman.
I'd love to see a picture of it, but I'm 99.9% sure that it wasn't a cataloged Marlin. Also, I don't recall too many 336s with impressed checkering, other than the economy grade Glenfields.

260RemGuy, I've been surfing the net all evening looking for more info. I also noticed the part about impressed checkering on the Glenfields. I didn't notice anything about "Glenfield" on this rifle. I was kind of in a hurry when I looked it over, but I haven't been able to get it out of my head all day. I'm thinking this warrants another trip to the pawn shop. I don't know if he will let me take a picture. I hate to get too interested, if you know what I mean, or his price will change, or at the least, he won't make me such a good deal.
I agree with you, that this probably wasn't cataloged, especially since it has the words "limited edition" engraved on the barrel. The only thing that's holding me back from going ahead and buying it, is it's not been cared for very well.
Thanks for the reply, Steve

Jeff, Your message box is full, and wouldn't accept my message.
I'm going to take another look at the rifle today, and should have more info later.

Jeff, False alarm......BIG TIME!! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/help.gif" alt="" />
The rifle was originally a Model 3082 Limited Edition "Calvary Commerative" in 30-30. Now here is where I screwed up. Because I was in a hurry when I looked at it yesterday, there was something I failed to notice. Someone had attempted to cover the original caliber designation, and replace it with "300 Sav". It has evidently been rechambered.
On top of this, it has been poorly cared for, and the bore is rusty and pitted. It's really too bad Bubba got a hold of this rifle. It may have had some collector's value if someone had taken care of it. After a re-examination, I wouldn't recommend that anyone purchase this rifle.
I apologize if this created any heart burn for you. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" /> I definitely learned a lesson myself.
Merry Christmas, Steve
