I bought this Marlin 336 sight unseen and that's a whole other story.

When I got it, I put a scope on it to do some load testing. Rifle was plenty accurate, the action works fine, doesn't jam. Didn't realize anything was wrong until I tried to shoot it with peep sights....

eek eek

Houston,..we have a problem.!

That's when I noticed something was amiss. I can't show you how far the barrel is out, but you can get an idea by how jacked up the rear sight is to hit what I'm aiming at.

I clamped the action in a mill vise and centered the mill spindle on the tapped holes on the top of the receiver.

Then I ran the table all the way down to the end of the barrel. Assuming the tapped holes are close the the CL of the receiver, the end of the barrel is close to 3/16 out.!

How could this have happened?

Best I could imagine, either:

1) Barrel is bent
2) Receiver threads were crooked
3) Barrel threads are crooked
4) Combination of all the above

In its current condition, it's uglier than homemade soap. I just can't get over having a sight that far out of whack.

Question is, without seeing it, can something like this be fixed?

If so, what would that entail.?

Is it new? If so I would send it back to Remlin and have them deal with it.

I bought a M700 in 308 that was out of true like that..Shot well enough, but I couldn't take it and sold it off.

No, it's not particularly new. I believe it dates to 2002, I bought it around 2004. It's a "JM" rifle...

I like it and would like to keep it if it's fixable, but don't know what that will cost or entail...

Put the scope back on it. Whatever the problem, to correct it will cost far more than the rifle is worth.

If the barrel is bent, it will be the cheapest to correct compared to any of the other possibilities. So I would check that first. first.

Why not just shift the front sight over a little so the rear sight doesn't have to be so far off center? It won't be near as noticeable and is a cheap fix. I have an old 336 in 44mg that I have been shooting that way since the 60's. In my case I think the front sight was mounted off center. The deer don't seem to mind the sights being a little off.

I've had a couple Remingtons with the same issue, got 'em used, so I don't know how they were treated before I got 'em.
