I am confused as to what the OP found. He evidently fired the rifle using 300 H&H. The fired brass came out looking like a 300Wthby? So what cartridge is it, a 300H&H AI?. Perhaps a photo or two could clear up a lot of confusion.

Yes, it goes in as 300 H&H and comes out as 300 ???? After looking at it I would say 300 H&H AI.

I recall way back plenty of guys loading up (or using factory ammo) .300 H&H to fireform their .300 Weatherby cases. I never saw a guy doing that for a Weatherby made rifle but did for rechambered Winchesters M70's and Remington M721's. Maybe putting it another way, a .300 Weatherby is a .300 H&H AI. I think this is how Roy arrived at it.

Back to the original post: this is a factory stainless steel barrel ordered without sights? Wow - trying to find one of those would be difficult. I realize you would accept a blued standard .300 H&H barrel, but given the rarity of what you thought you were getting, I'd be quite disappointed.

Isn't the OA length on the WBY longer than the H&H?

Isn't the OA length on the WBY longer than the H&H? No...for practical purposes they are the same length. In fact, the H&H is longer by .025" (2.850 for H&H vs. 2.825 for Wby).

Well, I guess I better see if a Wby round will chamber or at least have a chamber cast made.

Given you wanted a .300 H&H and you know it isn't that, why have a chamber cast made? I'd be boxing it back up if it were me. Not trying to badger you but it just seems you know everything you needed to know: it isn't what you wanted.

If you can negoiate a decent discount from the seller why not just keep it and use it the way it is? If it's a Weatherby it's actually a better, all be it not by much, round than the H&H.
By stainless I assume you mean that it is a blued stainless barrel correct? Not a stainless colored barrel. I've never seen nor heard of a M70 with a stainless colored barrel. Most of the varmints had stainless barrels that were coated with a certain metal and then blued.

Recall his original post where he noted he had been dreaming of owning a .300 H&H for over 20 years. I had an extremely nice Remington M721 .300 H&H that was completely original in all respects, very high condition but had been rechambered to the Weatherby. I had in mind to find an original barrel for it. Never happened and sold it several years later.

I sure hope I can find one. I love the rifle but if I can't make it a 300 H&H then the love affair will be over. Check with E.R. Shaw @ ershawbarrels.com

Its $5200 for that rifle. Personally I'd rather just have a new 300 H&H barrel installed for $600.

That isn't any $5200.00 rifle. Maybe in 30-40 years...

I think I have the twin to that one at home. That is what I have used until I could afford a model 70.

UPDATE: The dealer had said he would figure out what to do but won't return my calls or answer my e-mails. It has only been 4 days but now I am starting to get nervous. I may have to take a road trip to Oregon I guess.
