I am looking at ordering a 26" barreled Cooper Phoenix. I intend to use it for shooting deer and antelope at ranges out to 650 yards and paper to 800 yards. I am looking at the 308 Winchester and the 6.5-284 and trying to determine which would work best. I enjoy shooting and am concerned that the barrel life on the 6.5 is only around 1200 to 1500 rounds. Does the extra performance warrant the shorter barrel life? Opinions please.

The Good Lord gave us the 308 for a reason . . . . . . . . (grin)

6.5-284 has it all over the .308 at long range shooting. Lighter bullets with equal or greater BC=more fun in my book.

I am still kicking it around. I am tending to think the 6.5-284 will get the nod though. I can get it going for $1175 in the Cooper Phoenix with 26" at no extra charge.

30, they also offer a two stock plan if you can swing the extra funds.. the wood is just too purty to beat up but if you can swing the wood they will send you a fit glass stock also....

<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> i haven't got the number yet for the two stock plan so i cant comment on price but ifn' your gonna' do it............. on the other hand.. it would make a nice deposit on the next one if you can live with the glass stock on the first one and get wood on number 2!!!

The reason I am so interested is that my wood stocked 22-250 Cooper is the most accurate rifle I have ever shot. I'm thinking I could beat around on the Phoenix model and not feel too bad. I sold off a lefthanded Cooper that had great wood in order to help with the financing on this project. The 22-250 is going to see some serious duty on prairie rats this spring.
