Today I decided to check casting distance with an eleven foot spinning rod and reel with twelve pound test. There is over 100 yards of grass out in front of my porch for casting.

I have some five ounce lures so decided to start with that weight. After a few heave ho's it seemed they settled on about 200 feet. One of the casts was pretty spectacular. The back of the five ounce krockadile was pointing strait up with the front buried about two inches into the ground. After that I switched to a four ounce weight. The surprise is they went the same distance. So I tried a three ouncer. What a difference! The three ounce casts consistently measured 260 feet.

I can't help myself. This set up is going to Lake of the Wood and try for some big Browns or Lake Trout.

stxhunter,

You're probably younger than me. Or maybe bigger than me. OR maybe just better than me. Maybe even more educated than me. I don't know what a 4/0 is.

May I say you are a brute as a compliment? You are.

I wrapped a rod about thirty years ago. Some one stole it right out of my garage. I hope he enjoys it as much as I did.

stxhunter,

I forgot to ask you. What pound test do you use on that 4/0?

Roger,

Overhead cast or side-arm?

Ed

I wouldn't think you could really whip out a 5 oz lure on 12 lb test from a long rod without loosing the lure. I guess if the rod is not too stiff it might work.

STX, if you use any spinning gear with lures, do you use suffix or braid? thanks
