What have I got here? Marlin 1893 38-55, Serial #1008xx (made in 1894). It's in excellent condition, with only a few freckles of rust and unblemished wood. What's it worth? Values are all over the place on these things and I don't know if this is a $1000 or $2500 gun. Thanks

Thanks I'm leaning towards unauthentic, myself - Since AFAIK, those were issued with color case-hardened, and not blued, receivers. If the blued receiver letters as gennie, it's easily a $2500 rifle; if not, probably around $600. If it was MY rifle, I'd check & post your pic with http://www.marlin-collectors.com/forum/index.php - where there's a guest question forum. .
It ain't no fun, when the rabbit's got the gun

It was worth $905 on GB if anyone was curious. Nice rifle it was and I thought it would go for around $1k though it would not be worth that to me personally.

Didn't they make 2 versions, one special smokeless that used a case-hardened receiver and a black powder version that was blued. The black powder ones were in 32-20 and 38-55.
