Home Forums Lever Action Central Marlin 336 Lever Actions Can someone help a newbie??

I bought a Marlin 336 from the local pawn shop about 3 months ago and they really didnt know any info on the gun (such a year, model,etc.). So is there any way someone could help me out in figuring this out?? The serial # under the lever is V29387 and I really couldn't find one on the Marlin website that looked like this one. The tube is shorter than the barrel by about 5 or so inches. and the checkering on the pistol grip part is kind of in the shape of a W. Also there is a white circle with a black dot right infront of the rear sling stud. If someone could tell me about what this gun is worth that would be cool too. I dont really want to list the price I payed for it right now because I dont want to get mad if I payed too much. Thank you in advance.

You have a model 336 SC (sporting Carbine). Made in 1961 or 1962. The raised comb buttstock is correct for this year of mfg. They bring about $250 to $300 in my neck of the woods in excellent condition. The .35 rem brings a little premium over the 30-30. Nice gun!

I would rate the condition of it about 85-90% due to the spot on the side of the receiver (which wont be there for long). I payed 175 for it, it was marked 225 but I talked him down. I think I'll take off the scope, its just a cheap 3-9x40. The factory screws that go in the top of the receiver were in a little baggie ziptied to the lever, so that was pretty cool. Once again thank you for the quick reply.

The scope looks like a Simmons 8-point or so, correct? I agree with your decision to put some other scope on it.

Hmmm... an El Paso Weaver K4 would be perfect for that rifle, if you wanted a very good scope that would fit with the age of the rifle.

That is actually a deluxe 336 Sporting Carbine and they are much less common than the standard Sporting Carbines. I think that $350 to $400 is a fair range for your rifle and maybe a little more if it was chambered in 32 Win Special.

I just bought 1 in 35 Remington for about $350 that I am taking to Regan Nonneman for conversion to 356 tomorrow AM.

BTW, it is a good idea not to post the whole SN. Most folks "X" out the last 2 digits so that your SN would be V293xx.

If you are happy with it at the price you paid, and someone else did not get it first, you did not pay too much.

A lot of people wouldn't give you $50 for it.
A starving man with a moose in his back yard would pay $1,000.

white04hemi, 260remguy gave you the correct model. The checkering, Montecarlo stock and sling studs identify it as a DL model and worth at least a hundred bucks more than what I posted. You really did good on that one.

Thanks for all the replies. I really feel pretty good about buying it now. The scope is a NCStar 3-9x40 on Weaver 1" see-thru scope mounts. I already took it off and put the little screws back in the top of the receiver. I was thinking of trading it off to the local gun shop but now I think I'll keep ahold of it. Well thanks again.
