I put my first AR lower together last night. I used a Stag arms stripped lower receiver, a RRA lower parts kit, a Ergo overmolded right hand grip and an ACE Socom extendable stock with 1" pad.

I also bought an AGI DVD on the AR. The DVD was very marginal but gave me enough info to get the job done and it appears the lower will work just fine. I would imagine there are better tutorials out there. If somebody has used one they felt was well done, please let us know!

I opted to install the standard trigger that came with the parts kit to see just how bad it was. Now I know. I'll be calling Brownells this morning for a Jard. Actually, I had called them to order one but the guy was confused and confused me into believing I needed to know the pin sizes in my Colt lower and never called them back.

It was a fun build I would recommend to anyone wanting a lower receiver for their AR. If I hadn't wanted to try the ACE stock, it might have been just as economical to have purchased a complete RRA lower off GunBroker but now I understand completely how the lower receiver of my gun operates and how it goes together.

I told the wife I was anxious to do my next one. Silence!

The best tutorial I know of is on AR15.com. There are a lot cheaper ways than the one you chose to build a lower, but you'll have a real quality one building the way you did.

One trick I found when installing the pivot pin detent and spring. Use a flat feeler gage to hold the detent against the spring pressure and slide the pivot pin over it into the hole in the frame.

Thanks! I'll check that out. I really need to join that forum, I suppose.

Well, I wanted quality so that is good to hear. It would be interesting to hear how a cheap one could be reliably put together, so give us some pointers if you would.

I've put together several Model1Sales kits. I have had NO problems with them, and they ship quick. They go together just like the expensive ones, but some have had problems with them, I guess, but that is just hearsay.

A complete M1S or J&T kit runs you a little over $400. That includes the guts to the lower, so buy your stripped lower for $90-$100 from Superior, Mega, Stag, etc, and you have a $500 AR rifle.
