I just recieved a new to me 6mm Remington with the plan of using it for long range Yotes, deer, etc. Any experience with the 6mm 105 grn HPBT on game? Should I just run the Amax instead?

I use 105AMAX in my 6mm-270Winchester and don't have any complaints on deer, hogs and varmints.

If you are referring to the Hornady 105gr HPBT they work fine. About like the A-Max.

Ive never used the exact bullet in question but did slip two 68 gr. 224 through coyotes and was not really impressed. both were heart shots with coyotes showing no reaction to the hit. Decent blood trails but I felt they should have dropped on the spot.

Before you get too excited about shooting this bullet you need to find out what the twist is on your barrel. The 105gr HPBT shoot's best with a 1-8"twist and the 105gr A-Max needs 1-9.25" twist minimum.

I've not used a 6mm/.243 for a lot years. Used the 105 Speer spitzer and the 105 Speer round nose with excellent results, how ever the max distance was 150 yards. The round nose would put a respectable exit wound in the chest and a really impressive wound in the neck.

Source? The box on the AM says 1:9", and the HPBT box doesn't list a minimum twist. The HPBT is also shorter than the AM by a hair.

Yes, the Hornady 105...the manual says 1-10 minimum...and I'm running a RKS barrel in 1-9, so hopefully I'm ok. I'll load up a few and see if I can make em shoot. The biggest issue I'm worried about is that I'm limited to about 2.8 in my magazine which is a ways from the lands...and the bullet is taking up a lot of case...I expect I'll end up running a 95 grn VLD, but will give these ago until I can pick some up. Thanks for the replies!

Can you run a two shooter..?
One up the spout and one down? The top round usually has a bit more room to play with as it clears the mag confines.

FWIW, I had a Ruger 6mm awhile back, the 77V, but chopped to 21" before I got it. Federal brass, once fired, neck sized, H450 powder, and benchrest primers, shot 5 in ONE ragged hole, using 97 VLD's (guy named Hammett used to make them).
SO, no doubt that shot great in the 1:9 Ruger twist IIRC.
Good luck. FWIW, if you can mag length set those Amax's and get accuracy, you might try them in the field before you discount them.
I have killed several deer and varmints in 6BR...one deer at 400 yds....

I would see how they both shoot and stick with one bullet. In the long range game you will be better off. Gophers and plinking will get you ready and confident for larger game and the Gophers can't tell what they were hit by.
