BD...why is it that more than a couple hog outfits strongly advise a .30 caliber and up for piggy hunting? Are they skeered? Or more nervous that the average Klondike that hunts with them has no clue how to get it done with a 224 caliber projectile?

Operative word there is "outfits". Build the legend, raise the price.

Pigs die easier than deer. Their anatomy moves the vital zone (boiler room) forward and it might be that some shoot them a bit far back. Do that and it doesn't matter a lot what they get shot with, they will run.

The difference in boiler room theory and what I do goes mostly to the shooter's perception of what will result if bullet "A" is put in anatomy component "B". I know for a fact a .22 will not stop a pig with a cardiopulmonary shot so I don't do it. CF shooters think a boiler room shot will stop them, and they will IF it is put in the boiler room.

The other side of the coin is their anatomy limits range of motion for the head and neck as compared to deer. Much more better if one if inclined to plink the brain bucket.

BD....great response and great anatomical piggy picture! I am thinking a high velocity .22 CF in the bean or BR gets it done.

PS: Put a CF rifle bullet center of mass lungs (blue) they will usually flop on the spot. Worked for me with .410 and 20 Ga. Forster slugs, .257 Roberts (Sierra 90 gr BTHP), .30-30 Win. Buckshot loads to the shoulder are a boom-flop about 95% of the time and the rest might travel a half dozen steps, assuming the range is sufficiently short such that multiple hits occur.

I have killed 3 hogs with a single shot using 20 bore #3 buck on two occasions. Both times one of the collateral kills was a clean strike on the edge of the pattern and the other was hit by shot that passed thru the target. They weren't little piglets either, running 125-175#.

I recall some years back when popular dogma had it that a .338 Win Mag was entry level for elk...SSDD.

+5 or 6, whatever the count is. Great looking rig.

You ever know anyone that kissed or licked their scope while shooting in weather like that? Wondering if they got froze to it, and if so how that works out at the ER?
