Dont know if any of you men saw the Ruger #1 in 300 H&H Mesabi had for sale here in the classifieds a week or so ago but, she came in today, I picked her up and scoped it today.
I have another 300 H&H so I already had some loads worked up, have some 200 gr Swift A Frames and the same weight in a Partition.
I tried the Partition load first, and after a couple sighters I let the barrel cool and fired a three shot group of .777" at 100 yards, I am very pleased with the results and the rifle, I had forgot how svelte, light, and quick pointing these handy #1 rifles are.
This 26" barreled rifle is no longer than my 22" barreled bolt action rifles.
The load is 70.5 gr H-4831 SC with the Partitions and it chronoed 2915 fps from the 26" barrel, plenty of power for all NA game and African Plains game to boot.

That sounds really good, congrats on a great purchase. That is excellent speed for your 200 gr load.

Thanks GerryGoat, I'll be taking this rifle out on the Christmas deer hunt, I have one buck tag left, gonna try real hard to bleed her this year.
I mounted a new Minox ZA-5 2-10x40 in the factory Ruger rings, with the 4"s of constant eye relief it is a perfect scope for this rifle.

Mine shoots nearly one-holers with 165 gr Accubonds or BTs and IMR 4350. Trigger to die for right out of the box, no tuning, holds zero extremely well.
Maybe we ought to see the light and AI all these old obsolete cartridges...

Thats good to hear, and I must say I was pleasantly surprised at the trigger on this rifle, very little creep and feels like it breaks at around 4 lbs. And hail yes on the AI'ing, I'll buy the reamers so we can re-chamber these old dinosaurs to 300 Ultra for more speed. Gunner

Congrats I have a .300 win mag #1, but I looked hard at those H&H's. I think most all of the newer #1's seem to shoot very reliably.

I would have bought that rifle if I did not already have one.
And the price he paid was excellent.
Congrats to buyer and seller.

Although many here will say the chamber should be reamed to "AI" and the barrel cut to 23", it sounds perfect to me as is. Congratulations on a good find.

Many Thanks Gentlemen, I've been out shooting her a bit more this morning, swung over to a 311 yard sandstone rock and fired three more shots. At 2.5"s high at 100 yards the 200 gr Partitions at 2915 fps are landing around 3.5" to 4"s low at 311 yds, and as expected the 200 gr Partitions are still hitting with ample authority according to the metallic WHAACK and the clouds of tan sandstone rock smoke drifting off in the very slight wind. If you really want to make that rifle scream, punching a #1S out to 300 Weatherby is easy (did it over 25 years ago, sold it to a neighbor, still trying to get it back...not so likely after he shot a bull that went 379 B&C!). No magazine to fool with, no reason for a short-necked magnum designed for a standard length magazine box. Then again, you may like it just fine as is...

I dunno why anyone would punch out any .300 H&H to Weatherby these days. Back in the early days of Roy Weatherby's hype, sure, but if you want a .300 Weatherby these days there's no reason--especially since Ruger made the No. 1 in .300 Weatherby for a few years in the 90's. I had one, and it shot very well.
I had a No. 1 .300 H&H for a while, and it shot just as well as Gunner's. I intended to keep it--but then ran into a pre-'64 Model 70 Winchester in good but "hunting" shape (didn't want a collector) at close to the same price I could get for the Ruger....
Ya'll know how it is.

My .300 win mag #1 is a Liberty model, and has a very long throat - which is perfectly fine with me. A 180 Nosler BT seated to the lands has the OAL about 3.62"+. With Rel 22 I've seen some eye-popping velocities out of it, but now I try to run 180's around 3100 fps. It is quite accurate. I'd like to try the 7 STW sometime, maybe swap an extra stock set onto the stainless action. I wonder if we might see a .300 Ultra sometime in a limited edition But the next time I run across a black pad .270 Roy, with good wood, I'll make it mine

I like that idea alright; I hunted with one at the past hunt in March, though switched to the Montana when rain threatened. I'll probably take the .30-40 #1 next March. Or maybe the .45-70

That wouldn't be as bad as the Pre-64 .300 H&H's I've seen punched out to the Roy version. As mentioned, that was the rage back in the day. I hope those guys enjoyed the extra punch, because they sure whizzed off a chunk of equity in what would become an expensive rifle. DF

Reboring and thus destroying a 1S in 300 H&H for a caliber already made by Ruger and findable on a resale basis makes zero sense to me. Get a 300 WM for the project as lots more of them were made and you will not lose $ in the process.
There is a pre-64 Mod 70 .300 H&H puched out to 300 mag at the ORVIS store in Hannover PA. It has been there for at least 5 years gathering dust.... I've never seen a pre-64 Mod 70 in .300 H&H on offer.
