I had a #1 about 8 years ago in .338WM. I got rid of it, and I can't tell you why. I loaded the 180 Balistic Tips for deer, and shot it very little. It was pleasant to shoot, but at the time I just didn't have the time to tinker with it.

How are they for accuracy without any work? Trigger...would I need to replace the factory Ruger Trigger? Would that be hard? I have seen something on the net about something that I think is advertised as an accurizing device for bbl harmonizing or tension (not the rubber ducky thing), but a device exclusive to #1s. Is that crap, or something to consider?

Just want to know your experiences with them. Thanks in advance.

280....they are a wonderful toy to play with...I have heard of and actually seen those that didn't shoot very well without a little tinkering. I have some personal thoughts about those instances but we'll just leave that alone. I have personally shot a dozen or more different one's that shot to my liking, some were played with a lot, some just tweeked a little....The one I currently own is a real good shooter, 1/4 bore...It has NOT been tinkered in any way other than handloaded for. It shoots some factory loads as good or better than my own handloads. Some factory loads are like shooting a load of 00 buckshot. It wants a very fast bullet...

Personally, I like the looks, feel and accuracy of them. #1's will shoot very well, sometimes without doing anything to them as with any other rifle....#1's don't scare me and I would buy a dozen more....

Wildswalker,

Thanks...what about triggers, and working on them or replacing. Ruger still make the "lawyer-proof" triggers?

Not sure if I'm answering your questions or not....

I own a 1-B in 7mm Remington Magnum. My particular rifle was made in 1989 and has a decent piece of wood. It came with a Leupold Vari XII 3x9 of questionable quality that I have replaced with an M8 7.5X. Mine has a good trigger that breaks cleanly. I haven't measured the weight but I won't adjust it anyway.

Overall I like the rifle very much. I have tried many factory loads and with the exception of Federal's 140 gr. Partition load each shot to less than 1.5 inches. My rifle really likes 160 gr Partitions and Accubonds and the cheapo 150 gr Remington Core-lokts. If I do my part I can get to slightly under an inch with each. I think that is pretty good with factory ammo. So far, I have not had any stringing problems or forearm issues and it has held it zero very well.

.280, I can't tell you a thing about replacing a #1 trigger. I've never had too. Mine have always been just fine...the one I drive now breaks nice and clean at 2 1/4 pounds.

The other #1's that I know of and have shot myself...I don't believe were changed either...The factory trigger doesn't bother me for what I need a rifle for....

I have not pulled a #1 trigger made in the last ten years so I really can't say about the newer made #1s.

The trigger on my brand new #1 RSI 7x57 feels amazing. However, it's the first rifle I've owned in many years, so I might not know what I'm talking about. I'm mostly a handgunner, but this trigger feels lighter, shorter and crisper than any tuned 1911 I've shot. It feels almost as good as the single action pull on my vintage S&W revolvers, which are worn in smooth as glass from 60+ years of life. Basing it on these, I would say it's around 3 pounds or maybe a tad more, with very little overtravel and virtually no creep.

Again, though: I'm comparing it to handguns, so take anything I say about rifle triggers with a grain of salt.

Regards,
Liam

I have that exact rifle...a #1B in .338 Win. Mag. Of the five #1s I've owned, all shot very well. I used handloads for each. Some shot everything well, while a couple hated some loads but loved others. Bottom line, without tinkering with the rifles themselves, I was able to get sub 1" groups out of each. The above mentioned .338 puts 3 210gr Partitions in legitimate 1/2" clusters at 100 yards. I have a Leupold 2.5x8 on it so I figure I could tinker with it, but why bother.?.?

In the past I've had #1s in 257 rob. 270 several in 3006 375h&h and 416 rigby.
Currently I have one in 3006, all were stock rifles, all shot better than I could/can.

I had a #1 in 7x57. It was termed an a-b for some reason. No iron sights, just rings. I loved the caliber, but I never shot well with it. It was nice looking, but the heavy walnut stock and thin little barrel made it hard to shoot well. It just wasn't balanced. But... even when braced on a bench using mil surplus (and other) ammo, I often shot 8" groups. I admit I didn't break it properly (according to some) so it just sat in the closet most of the time. I finally decided to try to make it shoot. I placed a dense nylon ring around the barrel/forearm screw so the barrel would be quasi pillar bedded and made sure the barrel was free-floated. That let me shoot to 2" groups. I had decided I just couldn't shoot well, but I later had rifles I could shoot moa and less so it wasn't always me!

I talked to a technician at Walter Craig's shop in Selma and he felt that rifles with 2-piece stocks were very unpredictable and did not encourage me to invest any $ in it. It gone now, but I still miss not having a #1.

Hey 280
The nbr 1 is like a Harley Davidson. They are just sexy to look at before they perform. either you love them or hate them. As MD said they will break your heart. especially if you sell one you will not be happy until you get another. nbr 1 shooters are special people who love style and performance. costomized ones are just like Harleys you can do about anything with them. As for my 1B I wont part with it. I hear alot of people who complain about the weight of them. This is never a factor I just get used to the weight. Doesnt bother me to much. Bill Ruger corrupted us all.
