You are right. They can be mounted sideways, but I think that looks a little weird.

I think they are a very nice unit, however, I think they are over engineered.
I like the buttler creek for their simplicity. Easy on..easy off. In the 10+ years I have used them, I have never had a problem. Inexpensive...and they work.

I had that situation on one rifle, so I just cut the interfering section out. I don't know if that was the best thing to do, but it worked.
