I wasn't trying to steer you to the saum, the wsm will suit you just fine! I can't wait to see the finished rifle. The only reason I bought mine was I threw up a wanted ad on an Alaska forum looking for a stainless moose rifle and I was intrigued by the saum a guy offered. If it had been a wsm I prolly would have bought it too.

.600 @ 24"

I just measured my 23" FW/7WSM tube and it's .58"

What's triggers are available aftermarket for them? I sure did like the EW I handled. The trigger was maybe acceptable. Hard to tell in the gun shop.

That's one nice thing with Kimbers... very good trigger (IMHO).

MOA trigger adjust down nicely or you can buy a Timney.

I have a EW in 300 wsm and it aint to heavy at all with talley lw and a conquest for me.

Are non of you guys running superformance powder? I'm running 168 btips at 3230fps. I'd skip 180 nabs and run 165 at 3200 or wait for the 190 long range ab.

Lets make this easy - M70 300 EW, 300 WSM first, M70 SS FW 7 WSM second. Mitutoyo calipers:

3.3" from receiver-barrel junction: 0.940, 0.935
6" from receiver-barrel junction: 0.805, 0.790
6" from end of barrel (both 24"): 0.675, 0.670
Muzzle: 0.605, 0.605

A few pics. M70 EW 300 WSM has flutes, M70 SS FW does not.

Ace(Dan), I will sell you my hayfield rifle. It should meet your parameters.
Unless you use the rifle to club a grizzly to death, then the bottom plastic might break.

Stop complaining Jeffrey.

Timney sells them Jeffrey.

Dan could wear out that grizzly bear snatch with a good WSM.

Not sure which stock it'll wind up in... Micky or Bansner. Ideally, I'd like to get my hands on both.

Dan,

I took a ride out to the nearby AF base and looked at mod 70 EW and have to say I was impressed. I've been mostly a Remington fan, but the weight, balance, feel was nice! I personally didn't think the B&C stock felt at all "clubby." Not sure what the going price is at other places, but at the Base Exchange, it was just under $900.00. Unfortunately for me, it doesn't look like they come in a left-hand model. Guess I'll see what a Sporter or FWT version looks like.

Now back to reading the rest of this interesting thread!

Bwinters, thanks for the pics. I never would've guessed that Winchester would have 2 different contours between those two models. I would've guessed they fluted the FW and called it a day.

Honestly, now it'll come down to which model I find first. I know I could go down and buy a Black Shadow in stainless for 839 bucks, then call McMillan. But if I go the EW, then I got a takeoff I can sell once I get a Mickey, and if it works out, I'll be hinting it this fall.

If you buy the EW, you can sell the takeoff barrel as well. That is if you still intend to put a custom on it. Why not consider the classic with the old style trigger that was posted the other day??? You are basically just looking for the action to build off of anyway. There's also a FN SPR action in the classifieds that would also work, but it's priced a little (I mean a lot) high. Quite a few options really...

Personally I'd be for betting that the EW tube would shoot lights out.

If not I know where a 7 WSM tubes hiding out...grin

I'm still working on burning up my 300 wsm barrel grin.. I truly love the cartridge, but have noticed it does not feed as nicely as the old 300 belted magnums..... frown

Well, the plan is, to shoot the donor. If it's under MOA, it'll get about 3K down that tube before it goes to a gunsmith.

I'm leaning towards the EW
