Don't know if someone has mentioned this yet, but just saw that the Vanguard Backcountry is being reintroduced for 2013. MSRP is $1299 and is Gray Cerakoted unlike the original. Seems to be same calibers before all at 6 3/4# & 24" barrels. I have the original model in 270 Win & 300 Wthby Mag, but wanted one in 257 Wthby, so.......

Wish they'd just use stainless and lower the price, but looks to be a nice rifle otherwise.

Looks like a nice gun as do the rest of the VG's. What i don't get is how they lost 3/4lb.compared to the rest of the VG line. I know it's got a fluted barrel but you're not loosing 3/4lb just by fluting a barrel.

Yes Alex, the price is up there. Got lucky & got both of mine on clearance for $600 each. Wish I had got an '06 too.

For those of you that have owned one, Is the upgraded stock and slight weight loss worth double the price of the base VG S2? Let's face it, 6 3/4lbs is not much of a lightweight. I had a base model 257wby that I really liked but sold to a buddy. Got the itch to try a 240wby.

TATELAW you are on the $ with the question - Base SII is MSRP $799 & The new Backcountry II MSRP is $1399 - is it worth the $$ for about 1/2#-3/4# less & an upgraded stock. If I had not gotten them on sale, I doubt I would have sprung for the original price on a Backcountry as they both have the same accuracy info.

Basically pricing themselves out of the marketplace. The Vanguard was supposed to give Weatherby a lower priced gun to compete with Rem & Win - looks like they forgot that. Really nice gun but for the $$$ there is an awful lot of great guns available.

Yep, no way I'm paying that much for a Vanguard and only saving that little amount of weight. Looks like if I want a 240 it's going to be a slightly heavy VG S2 or a more expensive but significantly lighter Mark V Ultra Lightweight. MSRP on those is $2100(street about $1750-1800) but they come in at 5 3/4 pounds. I just don't see a $1400 Vanguard being a hot seller.

Order a stainless VS2.....buy the vanguard back country stock from the custom shop for $300(ish)...think they may have charged me a bit less...
Same gun(no flutes or coating) for much less. By the way...$1062 retail for what I mentioned...$125 more for Blackened flutes on the barrel...

Or buy an S2 240 and stick it in a Manners or Brown Precision stock to get down to a lower weight (since Micky doesn't offer Howa/Vanguard stocks unless I am mistaken)

Weatherby has gone nuts. I paid less than $650 for this one, in .30-06, NIB a couple of years ago. It's now my 12 year old boy's do-it-all-forever rifle. P
Obey lawful commands. Video interactions. Hold bad cops accountable. Problem solved.

I don't know about the Vanguard II but McMillan did the Sako Classic for the Vanguard. I have a .300 win mag with an edge stock. $450 for the vanguard and $475 for the edge stock and weighs less than the backcountry.
Otto is my co-pilot.
