I always looked forward to reading his stuff. True Class act as a person and a writer. I guess he is responsible for my Sako affliction .

One of his old articles is what turned me on to the 338WinMag. That magazine still sits on the coffee table at my camp. He was one of the good ones. If it was the Wyoming Elk hunt then that was a fine article.

Sad news. He was an influential writer in my early years. Many articles of his still occupy my files. But we all face this one day too and hope to be prepared.

He gave us a lot, and for that we owe him a lot.
Rest in peace John, and thank you.

The writings of John Wooters always delighted and instructed me. I owe a lot to his published works.

I was never able to meet the man but he was a great influence on how I look at guns and hunting.
I have a full stock Sako in 308 because of him,and I think he was the reason I became a fan of the 280 Remington.
When he wrote about the 1000 acre Texas ranch he and his wife were able to purchase by selling a smaller east Texas property I was inspired to try to do the same thing In Alabama, and today have a nice place in the Alabama blackbelt.
Like Steelhead,I mourned when he had to sell his place because it had become unsafe due to illegal aliens and their crime in the area.
He is missed.

I will miss his writing, few were his equal, none better at down to earth hunting.

I am deeply saddened to read this as I had/have a LOT of respect for John's writing and enjoyed many hours reading his work.
He was, IMO, among the few gunwriters who were really worth serious attention and his full house custom .280Rem. by Joe Balickie, was simply an outstanding example of function and "class" combined in one rifle.
RIP. John, a lot of good guys will miss you and I hope that the hunting fields of Paradise are your eternal abode. JW also had a very snazzy Mannlicher-stocked Winchester M88 in 7-08 by Balickie. John was always one of my favorites, too. It's sad to see another of our gunwriting icons pass on.

I just looked and didn't see a Wikipedia entry for him. Anyone know his DOB? I met him once at the Houston Woods and Waters Club back around 1972 and he seemed to be about 40 then.

Thus, my little corner of the world gets just a little bit lonlier... I recall many an enjoyable interlude in life just caught up in the pages of his article... Tho' I never met the man, I shall miss him like an old friend. R.I.P... Intercessionary prayers offered on behalf of John and his family... GH
