seems to be available in modest amounts. I've been wanting to try some but was going to wait for a gun show. Powder Valley has it and I ordered two 8 pound jugs today. Not an inflated price, either, except for $27 HAZMAT fee. I'm looking forward to trying it.

Mickey, I've been using SR-4759 for years in all my .30 and .45 caliber rifles and love it. Mild to moderate loads are where it's at with this stuff. It really shines when putting loads together for beginning shooters and for us old guys who just want a lot of trigger time with big bores but don't like the trauma that can go with them. It's what I use when putting loads together for my .458WM when I'm practicing my offhand shooting. I think you're going to like it. Ed

That's good news, Ed, cause I've got 16 pounds of it coming. Since I've started casting I've started to enjoy shooting again. I had pretty much lost interest since my eyes started going bad but the degeneration of the macular has seemed to stabilized and where the wires cross in the scope are more stable. I hope it continues. I ordered the .35 calber mould for my Whelen last night and now I've got to order the gas checks.

If all I was allowed to shoot for the rest of my life was cast bullets and SR-4759 I wouldn't complain a bit. My powder guy always has it on the shelf. He said I'm about the only guy who buys it.

It's a new experience for me but since I've gotten back into cast bullets I've become interested in shooting again.

Since I haven't been reloading but a year, I haven't crossed paths with this powder. I load 30-30 and 45/70 to top with gas checked cast. I'll have to check this SR 4759 out. Thank you

Good powder for cast, Mickey when you start paper patching and cooking your own lubes then you know you have stepped over to the dark side. Have fun Russ

SR4759 and paper patched cast bullets are great fun and work well in hunting situations. A big plus is no gas check costs!

yes their layout is a tad different than this one. I've found thier layout to be very similar to many other sites I frequent.

Mickey, never say never. Pope had a lot on the ball. In all kidding aside the cast lead bullet has a lot of interest for those of us that like the challenge of making your own

I'll find a "how to" on making paper patched bullets and give it a read.

Be careful, Mickey. If you start typing "boolit" we might have to do an intervention here...

Be careful, Mickey. If you start typing "boolit" we might have to do an intervention here... Don't worry--that ain't gonna happen. When I subscribed to 'Organic Gardening' it drove me crazy when people would use 'chokes' for Jersualem artichokes, 'bagas' for rutabagas and 'matoes' for tomatoes. Everybody who has any sense knows that it's 'MATERS'.

Yeah, that's the next thing I want to try. Paper patching allows for use of softer lead too, no?

Yes. I have been doing a lot of studying on the matter while I attempt to gather the shekels to buy a Sharps.
I want to correct the title of the book I was speaking to Mickey about, it is "The Practical (not perfect) Paper Patched Bullet" by Paul Matthews.
It explains his findings on BHN and paper patching.
I am now looking at several bullet molds for .30 cal and .45 cal PP bullets as I would like to try it.

I seem to recall reading that paper patched bullets tend to be a bit abrasive to bore. Anybody ever heard similar or to the contrary?

I use Rooster Jacket on the bullet after it is patched. I would imagine teflon spray or a floor wax would work also. The paper is Strathmore with high rag content. As to Softness, I stick with 30:1, (lead / tin). It expands well on moose and bear at 200 yds. and under.

have never seen that to be the case, but then I also lube the patching with a liquid made with Lee Alox, Johnsons paste wax and mineral spirits

depends on the paper you use as to how rough it can be.
