my venture into a used piece of dung outboard last summer failed miserably. gonna buy new now. tohatsu/nissan has the best cash deal on a new 9.8 hp 4-stroke with tank, hose, prop, free shipping, no tax for 1,619. closest a local dealer can come here is a 9.9 merc for 2,100.
what say ye? it's for a small tri-hull fiberglas fishing boat of about 350 pounds. we used it all summer with an electric trolling motor. great fishing platform for small water.

Nissans have twice the warranty of most other brands...2 yrs vs 1 years.
If you can swing it, go for a 15 hp instead of 9.8. Believe me, you'll never regret it. I don't know about Nissan, but in other brands the only difference is RPM. They take the governor off the 9.8 so it runs faster.

the tohatsu 15 has more displacement, same peak operating rpms. it's also 114 pounds vs. 81 pounds.

That could well be true now that everyone is going to 4 strokes. My 15hp is a 2 stroke Evinrude. Almost all the parts are interchangable with the 9.9.
Why does everyone make a 9.8 or 9.9 instead of a 10? All I can figure is that there must be some goverment regulation that kicks in at 10hp.

I think that some lakes have a horsepower restriction that any outboard must be lower than 10hp. Thus the 9.9.

I believe the merc is now the same as/made by tohatsu also. I used a 2004 8hp 4 stroke merc for a season. Awsome motor except the low speed throttle response sucks big time for trolling/backtrolling. Typical of the 4 strokes so im told. I prefer the older 2 strokes myself.

ended up with a 5-hp merc four stroke, made by either yamaha or tohatsu ...
even though it's still not broken in, it trolls lke a top. pushes my 400-pound fiberglas 15-foot flatbottom very smoothly at half throttle. it'll do 'round here for trotlining, jugging and such on the river. a 4-year-old could start the thing.
