Old school chopper pilots got indoctrinated on that very early due to low power/high gross weights and density altitude. Onset recognition was top of the menu.
Never experienced it other than in training on the issue while flying OH23s. There a few times where it was a possible outcome but manage to avoid it. Did manage to enter retreating blade stall in a LOH one day. Loads of fun. Also got on the ragged edge of doing it in a Snake.

Is the solution flying out of it and grabbing some clean air? I know the Dodo's have had a bit of a bad rap over the years but the Gov. is financially in deep and committed...

BD can correct me if I'm wrong but the cure for single rotors is lowering collective (counterintuitive) and pitching the cyclic forward. I read a report on the V-22 accident and they found the solution on the Osprey was even easier...hit a button to rotate the nacelles...done (does the same thing). Dan confirmed what I've read, early detection is the key. Know the flight attitudes that lead to it and stay the hell away from them!

Is the solution flying out of it and grabbing some clean air? That... Counter intuitive is the right term. The event only occurs when hovering out of ground effect. That does not occur at 3000' above ground. No, it happens when you're hovering 25' over trees that are 125' tall on the side of a mountain at 4500' and you have 3 guys rappelling down the ropes. Reducing power will quickly resolve the matter by replacing one horror with another. The usual solution is to accelerate into 'clean air'. Guys on the ropes are phouc'd. As suggested earlier there were/are strategies and options available to minimize the likelihood of this occurrence but combat is a fickle bitch and chitt happens. Operations over in the 'Stan are at much higher density altitudes than we dealt with in 'Nam and I'm quite sure the topic remains front and center in the minds of all hoverbugs.

A solid woman from the beaches of Rio, the "infamous" Watermelon Woman..simply awesome

What makes it worse is that with all the new digital stuff, bitching betty starts squawking and your transgressions are recorded in the onboard database for maintenance - and management.
