Got out to shoot a few rigs today, been a while since I shot but it went well. My 7mm Rem Mag with a 25" rock tube and 8.5 twist had wanted to shoot 71 grains of H1000 with 180 bergers the last time I was out. So I loaded 15 rounds and had 5 groups of 3 at different seating depths. To touch the lands in this long throat requires 3.505 with the 180 berger. The 3.38 OAL shot decently, 3.41 poorly, 3.44 a little better, 3.47 pictured below and 3.5 not so good. Speed for the 3 at 3.47 went 2936, 2940, 2946. Again, this is a long throat so be sure to work up to that charge. If I can get it to repeat a few times, I'll be very happy. The Bergers do seem to be very seating depth sensitive.

Kurt, that is a great group! I'm giving the 168 VLD a go in my 7WSM.

That'll do! I'd be interested to know if the 180 Hybrids would be as seating depth sensitive in the rifle...

I'm using H4831 in mine. 180 gr Berger Hunting VLD's seated +.010 into the lands in a Kreiger barrel chambered specifically for this bullet. It holds minute of groundhog past 1100 yards. I'm getting 2980 fps.

That's about how far off my loads like to live from the lands. I would be very curious to see what happens with several 5 shot groups. Looks like you have a solid load.

Looks like you found your COAL accuracy node. Good group BTW. With my 6.5-284 and 140 Bergers, I found two accuracy node COAL's. I talked to a Berger tech. He said they have seen that but couldn't explain it. I went with the longer COAL because it gave more case capacity. With my experimenting with VLD bullets, I've seen better accuracy with jumping as compared to touching or jamming. VLD's seem to be very COAL sensitive. I'm waiting on info about the Hybrids. DF

Got some 168 hybrids I am going to try also. I tried that same oal with the 180s again and can't hold the accuracy consistently. Have a few more things to try out yet. Looks like rifle bear and elk this fall so want to run this rig once things get dialed in.
Remeasured max oal with 180 vld bullet at 3.475. Measured max oal with 168 hybrid and it was 3.325. Huge difference in nose shape on those puppies.

30338:
You didn't say which 180. VLD target or hunting or target hybrid.
I had a good load with the 180 VLD in a 30" 7 Rem Mag with bullet .035" into rifling.
If I were to use a 180 in the future I'd go for the hybrid. Besides the higher BC, they are easy to load. My experiences with 7 rifles in various chamberings has shown that the hybrids are insensitive to seating depth, just as Berger advertizes. Last three rifles I loaded I just seated bullet to fit and feed from magazine and worked up powder charge. Found a 308 win's load in just 12 test shots!

The 180 is a hunting vld. Interestingly it seemed to shoot more consistently last weekend seated about .09 off the lands. Going to try that again to see what happens.
I also ran 168 Hybrids using retumbo last weekend. Those right at the lands shot best and as they got further from lands they started going everywhere. So in my rig at least, they seem a bit sensitive still. The groups on the lands were quite nice though and going to run those again. These were going 3060 fps with 72 grains of Retumbo in my longer throated 7mm remmy.
I'll happily run either bullet so the first one that I can get to consistently perform will get used.
