Thanks Hank

I'd rather have an Armalite because S&W doesn't make a .308 M&P in a configuration that I would want to buy.

I'd rather have a DPMS/SR25 pattern .308 over both though.

S&W - lighter rifle, much better fire control setup.
Ambi safety, bolt release, and magazine releases already on the rifle.

Downside, too new for many parts swaps, and NOT DPMS compatible.

Armalite now sells a version of the AR-10 that takes PMAGS, for those who want to be compatible with other platform's mags.

I have two Armalites and am pleased with them as far as accuracy and reliability. My carbine has now gained a Rainier Arms/Shilen 18" Ultamatch barrel, which weighs less than the 20" bull barrels and shoots, very, very well.

Get an LR308 pattern, which is not the Armalite. Way more options, way better rifle design. S&W wouldn't be my first choice; I want an 18" heavy barrel when I get one.

LR308 a better design? I don't think so.

Armalite has always been at the top.

Not DPMS cap? Please splain I really dont know

Ironically today I found a DPMS at a shop I frequent and the guy was willing to work with me
One of my ARs is DPMS I am not sure I thought of them as a first tier manufact not that they are bad Please dont get me wrong I would have thought Armalite was concidered quite a bit better

Hank,

Tried a DPMS upper on the S&W lower, the front pin will push through, but the receiver binds at the 15-30 degree angle before full closer. Looks like the length of the DPMS lugs is slighter shorter than the depth of the lower pins.

Tried my DPMS lower on the SW upper, the back lug was too tight to fit in the lower lug channel.

Only a data point of two, but these two rifles won't interchange without mods to both.

I have two Armalites both t models (one on an Iron Ridge Lower). From the research I did before hand you can't hardly go wrong with any of the big AR platforms. Pick one and enjoy the marriage because they don't interact like the Ar-15's do.

No complaints on mine by the way. Be aware I have been told by numerous owners and reading that ALL of them require need stupid amounts of lubricant on the bolt compared to the regular AR's.

The only function problem I had with either of the AR-10's was failing to extract. I bought Armalite's replacement extractor spring & insert kit, and that fixed the problem.
