What companies offer prechambered barrels for Savage actions? Know it's probably on here somewhere but I'll ask to save time searching. Have a chance to pick up a used Savage 110 with a bad barrel and was looking for maybe a rebarrel project without getting into alot of time and money.

Many companies offer Savage barrels.
The cheapest is a takeoff, then A&B, then ER Shaw.
Most of the custom barrelmakers such as Shilen, PacNor, Criterion and other sell prechambered and threaded for Savages.
The custom makers will also make you a nutless barrel if you wish although these require fitting by someone who can run a lathe.

The Criterion barrels are probably the best value for a savage. They're button rifled barrels made by Kreiger, I have one on a 22-250 and it shoots fantastic. Go to www.savageshooters.com and read up on them, Northland shooters supply sells them pre-chambered for $280.

What caliber and barrel profile are you looking for? Seems most of the aftermarket barrels are heavy contour. As I have gotten older, I want lighter not heavier. Savage factory barrels can be had used for $50 up used and $85 and up new. Aftermarket barrels start about $250 and go way up.

I agree 100%.

I just don't understand the desire to carry a truck axle sized barrel around!
Give me a #1 or #2 contour.

What chambering are you looking for?

If it would work for you, I have a low round count, less than 100 shots fired, 24" blued CM A&B in 30-06.

eBay is allowing barrels to be sold again, so you might check there and on GB. Don't forget to search for the Stevens 200 barrels, as they are the same as the Savage factory barrels. I have rechambered 5 Stevens 200 223 barrel to 22-250, 'cause they have a 1-9" ROT and offer the least expensive path (that I've found) to a quicker twist .224" bore rifle. Since I'm typically shooting 55 to 65 grain bullets, the 1-9" ROT works fine for my applications.

It appears that MidwayUSA has discontinued the Adams & Bennet (A&B) line of Savage 110 series barrels, which is too bad, 'cause the 8 or 9 that I've had were all pretty good shooters. MidwayUSA has some Shilen and Shaw barrels, but the Shilens are all heavy/varmint contour and many of the Shaws are out of stock, but available for backorder if you're not in a hurry. My best shooting Savage 110 series rifle has a heavy stainless Shilen barrel in 260 installed.

I'm thinking of getting this setup:
Shaw at Midwayusa

This would be my first switch barrel experience.

Any opinions?

Brownells sells those Shaw kits too. I purchased one in 338-06 and it shot great, but as has been pointed out truck axles don't appeal.

That 7-08 kit is in my wish list and if it shoots half as well as my first Shaw tube I think a bulk purchase of 162 gr AMaxes will be in my future!

Thanks for the input efw. Brownells doesn't have anything in stock right now, and doesn't list the 7-08 (at least currently).

Truck axle? The link on midway says factory contour?

Sorry for the confusion... for some odd reason Shaw won't drill factory contour barrels with holes larger than 30 cal, so my 338-06 was heavy magnum contour which was too much to me.

You're right; that 7-08 is a factory contour, and that is a big reason why I intend to get one... That and the fact that, weight notwithstanding, that 338-06 shot beautifully!

Also, I'm open to a take off barrel (new or near new) but they are not real common in 7-08 and the couple I've ran into are the goofy slower twist that savage did for a couple of years (a few years back).

Join savageshooters.com and check out northland shooters supply's page in the classified ads. Jim Briggs is a great guy to deal with and has blued take-offs in stock right now, brand new, for $85 + shipping.

My experience w/ these tubes has been excellent. My buddy has a Stevens 200 in 308 Win and it is AMAZING how accurate that thing is.

Thanks..efw...I'm on ss.com. I just spoke to Jim and they only have a SS Shilen in that caliber. It's an idea I'm going to keep in mind, and I'll keep looking.

Oh that sucks... 7-08 Stevens 200 take-offs are listed as in stock on his page?

The more we talk about this the more I think that ss Shaw kit has my name all over it...

I'd get the ss barrel and then coat the whole rifle. The finish on the plain 110 isn't all that nice anway so a diy duracoat would be an improvement. I think you can still get a kit that will do a couple rifles for @ $50.

I've got a couple of Savages that are about to get Parkerized and Duracoated. One has a 308 barrel that I got from Jim Briggs. Shoots pretty good. I haven't really tried to wring it out yet. It's too bad about the Midway barrels! I've got a 250 savage barrel on my Stevens 200 and it's a great shooter.

McGowen, Pacnor, and Begerra are all doing Savage pre-fits and Rem-age/rem-nut 700 barrels as well.
