I need some input from guys who do load for the 6.5x284. A buddy just got one and the data in his 4 or 5 books are all over the place on starting loads and max loads. He is looking at shooting 140 grain bullets and R22 powder providing he can get a good load for it. Any help would be appreciated.

Shooting 140 SST's and 140 VLD's, Vv N165 was one of the most accurate powders. I tried it, based on the recommendation of my smith who told me that some of the top LR competitive shooters liked it. The accuracy node was at 2,950 fps.

I recently started using RL-17 and can push 140's to 3,000 fps without giving up much in the way of accuracy. This gun, a custom pre-64, blueprinted with Borden's Bumps and a 26" sporter weight Kreiger will group 4 1/2" at 600 yds. It's a bit over 9#'s with a Z5 3.5-18x44 BT and Outdoorsmans turret set up for this load. Ideal combo for whitetails, pronghorns and hogs.

Chambers are different is it a 6.5 X 284 Winchester or Norma?
Max loads between the 2 vary. Mine started as a 6.5 X 284 Winchester and had it rechambered to Norma.

Best to use a chrono and work up to book velocity. My 24" shows pressure above 2850 FPS with most 140 gr bullets.

The one I referenced is the Norma version.
