The first couple of Marlins I owned in .45-70 had the Micro Groove, the last 2 had the Ballard and I would have to say that they were more accurate... like 1" - 1 1/4" with most loads. The barrels on the NEF and H&R also had ballard type rifling and are/were very accurate as well. I also found that they cleaned up very nicely from copper or lead with less bother.

I suspect you are right about costs, though I have no proof of that. It may have been just a selling point for the unwary!

Since when? Last I knew most of their 30/30's are Microgroove.

Scott,

You are right.

Only the 45-70 has the ballard type rifling, all other available calibers are "micro groove".

One of the most accurate hunting rifles I owned was an 1895 Marlin with Micro-groove rifling. Interestingly, I could see the distortion of the bore by the sights in their dovetails. Nonetheless, this rifle was capable of producing sub-moa groups regularily. I once put 5 shots into .4 inch at a turkey shoot. The only problem was that the recoil was formidable (I shot 53 of 3031 and a Speer 400)and my performance would fall off after a couple of groups.
This barrel also shot surprisingly well with 450 grain cast bullets. I sized the bullets to .460" and groups were generally under 2 inches (47 of 3031 as I recall).
I traded this rifle off on a 40X and it remains one of those I wish I had back. GD
