Does any one besides Shiloh and C sharps make a modern day 50-70? I am looking for one for casual target shooting and possibly short range deer hunting. I have a Shiloh 1874 in 45-70 and a C sharps 1885 in 38-55 and both are nice rifles, just not wanting to spend $2500 or more for a 50-70.

Thanks

Get a C Sharps 1875 base price on those are relatively inexpensive.
I get the giggles when someone starts complaining about the price of a Shiloh or C Sharps, when a piece of crap AR copy will cost as much or more..

the most expensive bullet there is isn't worth a plug nickel if it don't go where its supposed to.

Original Rolling Blocks, or Original Trapdoors can be found for a grand or so. They demand caution in loading and operation, but for short range deer those big slugs don't have to be loaded very heavy to do the job.

Didn't think I was complaining, as I said "they are both nice rifles"

I paid less than $1200 for all of my ARs.

Never the less, thanks for the comments and if others have some thoughts, fire away.

A few weeks ago there was an ArmiSport Sharps SRC in .50-70 for sale on GunBroker; not sure if it's still there.

Some guy has a .50-70 Shiloh listed in the classifieds... grin

I have Shiloh-Sharps Plain Jane Business Rifles in .45-2.1 and .50-70 Govt. The .45 has the standard Shiloh .45 chamber whereas the .50 has a Paper Patch chamber.

IMO, the Business Rifle is the real sleeper in the Shiloh offerings: quick to point and fun to shoot. I believe the Business Rifle would make a dandy hunting rifle. And a Plain Jane rifle really is not that expensive.

Cimarron Arms offers a couple of Italian-made '74s in .50/70 but a those are just about or more expensive as a C. Sharps Bridgeport. For what you might think to be the best buy, take a look at the Hunter's Rifle in .50/70 by C. Sharps Arms. That's listed at $1825.

That Shiloh .50/70 for $2200 looks like something to jump on.

I have a semi-related question:
I have a military RB in 7mm that I would like to have converted into a classically styled 50-70. I was in communication with the gentleman at Lone Star Rifle, but sadly he has passed. I was saving up for his Custer Rifle using my action.
Can someone recommend a gunsmith that would be able to produce a similar project?
Thanks,
LouM

LouM, I'm in the very same boat and the 'smith I've been talking to is in Washington State. He mentions how the military 7mm actions are very good for such a conversion because they have a receiver ring large enough to "octagon" the top and sides to match the barrel. Other rb actions need to have metal added. He is also a Greem Mountain distributor and can barrel your gun for you. I'm sure he could stock the gun, probably with wood from Treebone. My plan is to stock the gun myself. Anyway, without beating about the bush any further, his name is John Taylor and is website is http://johntaylormachine.com/49.0.html. 303Mike

Lou, drop a PM to Crossfireoops. I have seen and shot rifles he has built, that is why I would choose him to build one for me.

First rate craftsmanship!

I had a Swedish RB that was converted to a .45-70 in sporting configuration by the Schuetzen Gun Co. in Drake, CO. They used to advertise rolling blocks as a specialty; might be worth checking out.

Sounds like a job for Crossfireoops to me.

Be very careful of that for many reasons. Muzzleloading barrels are often of unsuitable cartridge steel (and unsuitable muzzleloading steel too), patched roundball barrels have twists that are WAY too slow and they are still too slow in the miniball twist barrels. Most muzzleloader barrels have deeper rifling than cartridge guns too. And then there is need to mate it up to an action - which is pricey. Why not simply buy the proper barrel from the get go? Be cheaper, way more effective, and safer.

Try posting some in depth tech-detail, rather than sending folks off on and internet search.

e.g.

Investment CAST,......or

FORGED actions ?

You should re-read what Brent just posted, and quit oversimplifying that which can be somewhat complex.

I'd note this BPCR realm is no game for the word "Cheap", and that when that word appears, it's typically accompanied by the smell of BS, and unsafe product.

Alla' this gas about "Adding Metal" to, or Machining existing original Relic grade Receiver ring profiles to "Replicate" original octagon Sporter geometries is HORSECHIT, as well,....something that Dave H. (and a few others) and I could never, and WILL never agree upon. I wouldn't touch THAT stunt with a barge pole.

Keep your eyes open for a Rolling Block. I found a Husqvarna that had been rebarrelled to .50-70 for a good price on gun broker from a reputable source. I would take crossfireoops advice and do it right. Saving a few bucks may not be worth your fingers or more. It is hard to shoot accurately with barrel fragments in your eyes
