50-70 is a Musket load also the 50 Government was a cartridge in 1866-73 . Now here is the loags 350 gr bullet powder 3031 38 gr ft per sec 1310 the heavy weight are 450 gr bullet 4198 powder 26 gr 1410 ft per sec. These were put into old Springfields rifles. The last load were max for a black powder gun. That my friend comes from cartridge of the world Load IMR powder same as Ken Waters book Thank u Would I do it Don't know, but think Maybe yes Very "Informative",......nothing like intransigence when dealing with highly pressured hot gasses, and running em' through old Semi steel and IRON systems of 150 year's age. Safe ?,..........NOT ....when did we start calling this a Smokeless Powder forum, I must have been busy and missed that ?

You mean the "BP" in BPCR means "Black Powder"?
Guns don't kill people, it's mostly the bullets

I load a bunch of different stuff, but for an old rifle, I'd stick to black.
And I'll add that in a big case a light load of smokeless is subject to hangfires, and that's no fun at all. In particular I had it happen with 3031 in the .375 H&H.
If you're trying to say that Ken Waters recommended these loads, know that I learned a lot from his writings, and have a high regard for him, but I've gone a different direction in recent years.
And I'd be damn careful with any trapdoor, regardless of how you load it.

I have a semi-related question: I have a military RB in 7mm that I would like to have converted into a classically styled 50-70. I was in communication with the gentleman at Lone Star Rifle, but sadly he has passed. I was saving up for his Custer Rifle using my action. Can someone recommend a gunsmith that would be able to produce a similar project? Thanks, LouM Might check with Curt Hardcastle. http://hardcastlecustommachine.com/

The original OP was slanted towards getting something up ECONOMICALLY.
Kurt's work is of STELLAR quality, and I don't think he's going to be able to put together a "Poor Boy" in the price ranges discussed.........Tell ya' what,.... I damn sure won't be able to.
Something I tried for years to explain to Roller nuts is that after investing a ton of hard earned in a 'Conversion',....at the end of this investment ALL that one has is a conversion.
Seeking out and procuring one all ready (properly) built, or procuring a fine Lone Star built on those great actions Dave made is a FAR better course of action.
If one just HAS to have a conversion,....the Swede rollers are a good place to start, though the days of buying a good one for $200-300 seem to have disappeared behind us.
