Not sure if I'm gonna buy dies or not; gonna piss around with factory ammo for now.....any recommendations on factory ammo for hunting deer and black bear (mainly deer) in western PA that won't break the bank ( I see some upwards of $80 for 20 rounds!)?

Recommendation on lead or jacketed?

What grain?

Thanks for the input.

if your not hand loading..
but to me the big benefit to owning a large bore lever action is it easy use of 350grain-420 grain cast bullets that still gives you excellent accuracy and power levels from cheaply assembled hand loads.
both RL7 and IMR 4198 usually give very good results, and if you cast your own bullets cost is reduced to pennies a shot, vs over a $1.50 each for most factory ammo. in many cases youll find the 350-370 grain weights more accurate at lower velocities, yet these still punch hard enough even at fairly low 1300fps-1600fps to kill deer and hogs very effectively

May depend on scope ocular size and eye relief.

How about just going iron sights and enjoy roughing it?

Probably gonna run a 3-9x40. I'm a believer in taking advantage of technology

Another thought for ammo is the Remington green & white 350gr HP or SP marked "For Any Rifle".

It is accurate is every .45-70 I have shot, recoil is easy on the shoulder, and it will kill any black bear or deer in N. America.

Oh, you won't need that 3x9 with the .45-70. A straight 4 power scope will do everything you want, plus give you better light gathering ability. Just my $0.02.

Welcome to the club! grin

Thanks
Yeah, I'm pumped, can't wait to get out and put a few down range.
I said 3-9x40 just because it happens to be the only extra scope I have laying around. I may change in the future but gonna run with it for now..

I'll keep my eyes peeled for the hornaday a and the rems, thanks again.

What scope mount will this Henry take? Model H010 45-70

Snap on a scout scope and don't worry about it. One could run this unit wearing boxing gloves.
