I saw it this weekend at is was NICE. First year production, carbine in 30 GOVT 06 and it was NEARLY new with a pretty classy vintage scope. Beautiful rifle that really wanted to come home with me but the wife got excited at me spending $4,200 on a rifle. I have all week to wear her down........

I would give serious thought to buying a prewar rifle that had the rear bridge tapped for a scope mount. Nearly all collectors shun these and it would be difficult to get your money back if you decide to sell. If the scope is mounted utilizing the receiver sight holes (Stith mount) then you're fine. Prewar rifles should be totally unaltered to bring the big money.

What kind of scope mount was on it? As wizard mentioned if the gun is drilled and tapped the value is much lower. It's still very desirable but not worth as much. If it was an unaltered first year M70 $4200 is a pretty good value. Waht was the serial number range and did it have a "square" floor plate release?

Actually, when I saw the price I put the rifle down pretty fast. I was told it was 1st year production. The scope had external adjustments where the crosshairs actually move but beyond that I didn't look. I was just impressed by the blueing and finish on the stock. It was absolutely gorgeous.

Never, never , never--tell your wife what rifles cost! Now she'll never believe that that pre-64 Super grade 375 H&H mag that you just brought home only cost $300.

I worked at a gun shop many years ago and a guy came in and bought a Browning BAR, Leupold scope, hard case, etc. He had us make up a fake receipt showing he only paid $400 for the whole package. All was good till his wife came in about a month later with the receipt saying she wanted one just like it for her father for Christmas!
