I know because of the pressure one should not shoot a standard 375winchester load in a 38.55, but since the 38.55 is loaded to a lower pressure, couldn't one fire 38.55 ammo in a 375 winchester?

The 375 Win. case is 2.020 inch. The 38/55 case (new)is 2.085 and (old and Starline long)is 2.125 inches. That extra length along with an over sized bullett might cause some trouble.
As a side note. Ken Waters in the Jan. 79 issue of HANDLOADER worked-up to a full factory 375 win. load in a 38/55 Win. 94 and it held up but he said that he wouldn't recommend it, since that load showed "uncomfortably high pressures".

Everyone seems to think that the 38-55 and the 375 Win are one in the same. They are Not! Would you fire a 280 Rem in a rifle chambered for the 270 Win? Those two calibers are closer to the same than the 38-55 and 375 Win. The 38-55 bullet is .005 larger than the 375, the 38-55 case is .060 to .100 longer than the 375 and the 375 case is .007 larger in diameter. Then there is the issue of the tapered throat.......but you're probably going to do it anyway so.....have fun.

I have an aedequate supply of 375winchester brass and it is heavier and has the mentioned characteristics. Kind of what promted the question is a turn of the century winchester takedown i bought a few years ago, i found ONE 30.30 casing he had blown out for sure for that rifle. I have not shot it or slugged it. Now i have fired a winchester commemorative 38.55 and slugged the barrel too, and it is a LOT closer to .375 than .005 over.

as per a post i just put up, i was reading waters on the 200 grain bullet tonight with 4198, which i am sure he meant IMR powder. Sure a lot different than that on the hodgden site with h4198.
