Well finally was able to lay hands on the 165 and 175 Matrix and got out this morning to do some testing on them. Load and climate data are on the target:

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-...AApU/oyLSnKjxEBE/w763-h572-no/2013-08-03

As you can see I hit the upper limit with the 165's and H1000. There were no pressure signs at 58gr, but at 59gr there was sticky extraction and extractor marks on the case head. I did not hit the max end with the 175's, but was pleasantly surprised to find that they would indeed stabilize out of my rifle. I stopped at 54gr as that is all I had loaded. Any guess as to where I might hit pressure signs?

I do not have a chrono so I cannot provide speeds on these yet. . .

The rifle is a Model 70 that has been worked over some. Barrel is a 1:10 twist McGowan, 24", SS, #2 Shilen contour installed by Sin Arms. Stock is a B&C ultralight medalist. Scope is a Nikon Monarch 4-16x42. Rifle as pictured is 9.5lbs:

God bless fellas!

Interesting but what about load data? Don't think I'd wanna fly by the seat of my pants trying to load up either a 165 gr. or a 175 gr. bullet for my .270 Win or .270 WSM. Just wondering.

For the 165's Matrix recommends using data for the 160 Partition and starting low and working up. For the 175's I used data for the 180 Barnes and started low and worked up.

The reason to use these bullets is that their real world BC is coming in around .650 and .680 respectively. They really make the 270 start to perform like 280 or even a 30-06 in terms of long range effectiveness.

Thanks for the range report! I'll have to see if I can get them to stabilize out of my barrel now. I'll be using IMR 4350 most likely. I'll post a range report when i get around to it. Thanks!

Years ago when i got my 270,i also was given a box of 170 grain Federal shells.

being as i needed some brass to load up some deer loads i went out to the dog town and shot them up.

Hits were made way out there and there were parts flying.

The next day my arm had the nicest purple spot with a touch of yellow.

These are the first heavy bullets i have heard since then, hope they work out of many types of rifles.

Ahhhh....you're at 7200 feet ASL (or 4200? can't tell). That's why you got the 175s stabilized. Nice!

Best I'll be able to do on speeds is calculate them off the drops. . . I should be able to update ya'll tomorrow evening on the 165's for speed and the 175's for max load w/ H1000.

And yes, I am blessed to be so far in up in the sky!

Well I tried to get out this afternoon and run some drop tests to figure velocity from, but I must have had my zero set wrong. My bullets were basically hitting the same groups at 100 and 200 yards. . . I may have to rezero the scope and runs the tests again.

I did load the 175's up some more (up to 58gr of H1000) and was very surprised that I still was not getting pressure signs. These were still grouping down around the 5/8 MOA mark.

Anyone near Laramie have a chronograph and want to help a fella out?

Finally some velocity numbers for the 175's for you guys. By shooting at 300 and 400 yards and then working back I was able to calculate that the 175's over 58 gr of H1000 are leaving at about 2710 FPS, based on the average drop from 3 shot groups. These maintained sub-MOA at 400 yards. I have not hit any pressure signs with these yet, so I may work them up more when I get another batch of bullets.

The 165's jumped up to 2 MOA at 400 yards, so the average drop was not a very precise way to calculate speed in my opinion. I was disappointed in these, and am out of them, so I'll concentrate on the 175's for now.

Here is the target:

I wouldn't try to estimate velocity based on drop using unproven static BC numbers...

I used some field data from others, not the BC's matrix lists. I should have been more clear. I used .680 for these figures.

I don't have a chronograph, so this is the best I can do for now. . .

The Hodgdon/ADI data suggests 54g of H1000/AR2217 for 2540fps for a 180g bullet in a 24 inch barrel. While there's a lot of variables, I would suggest 2700fps for 58g sounds about on the money.

Don't take this as gospel, but I believe the Hodgdon data in respect of H1000 was all developed in the Australian ADI ballistics lab. I find (just my experience) some of their 270 Win data to be anemic to say the least.

So while I can't necessarily endorse your load of 4g above recommended max, I am not completely surprised.

I know there will some who completely disagree with my post, and should they do so you are just as well advised to listen to their counsel as mine. But really, 2540fps is paltry even for a 175g bullet out of the 270 Win case.

In any case keep your results coming please!

3 shots over a loaner chrono tonight averaged 2840 FPS. That's the 175 over 58 gr H1000 in a 24" McGowen tube.
