The Carbine looks like a 700 BDL to me. How long is the barrel? I do have some interest in this rifle. Thanks.

If this is and original carbine ( Made between 1962 to early 1964 ) the front sight should have been silver soldered and not attached with screws. I can't tell from your pics how the front sight is attached, nor can I tell the serial number range or barrel codes. I am a collector of these carbines and do not have a 222 rem. Thanks for you help.

When zooming in on the safety lever it appears to be round. Remington guns from the 1960s had square safeties. Round ones did not appear until close to 1970 when the stock checkering pattern changed.

Cabelas sold this rifle to me as an original carbine? Wouldn't be the first time a retailer BS'd a customer. I will take a look at the 222 tonight and answer lorman and Muskie questions and give a serial number.

If Cabelas sold this rifle as an original carbine and it is not you may have a bone to pick with them....

I remember a little about the front sight. It does have a pin in addition to the 2 screws which is something I had never seen on any 700's and the barrel is certainly discolored where the sight was?

The safety for sure isnt right on that 700, but it may have undergone their 'safety conversion' before Cabelas felt right about selling it. If you can open the bolt with the safety on, then it has had the conversion....and would be copasetic....not sure how the sight was sposed to go on...

The barrel length, codes & serial number will tell the tale. Early "carbine" barrels were 20" in length. This one appears 22" long. As mentioned, the safety lever should be flat unless the factory conversion has been performed. If original, the safety should lock the bolt handle down, not allowing it to lift.

Here is a little more info.
Barrel is 20" Safety is Round SN is 297XX Safety locks the bolt.
It is a good shooting rifle shooting 3 different 50 grain bullets between .5" and .7"
If someone doesn't want it for the price listed, my soon to be born grandson will be happy with it for sure.
Thanks all for the interest.
