Made it to the range this afternoon to test my first attempt at hand loading. Weather was 66, sunny, no wind. After getting on paper at 25yds (and probably pissing off the guy shooting at the pistol range), went up to 100 and fired a few three shot groups to get everything dialed in for deer hunting this fall.

First picture is .223 and .358. Quite happy with these groups. After these groups got them centered in and about 1.5" high at 100.

This group was my .300WM. I'm thinking I may get a little tighter groups if I play with the powder charges a bit, but should do just fine this fall.

That's really good for your first time out.
Congratulations.

With groups like that, your are probably hooked!!

Looks good man! For the 300 you can try a change in seating depth also.

Congrats and welcome to reloading. I still learn something new about reloading when doing it?

Good deal. Looks like another one that's not going back to factory fodder too soon wink

So long as I can get my hands on some 358 win brass, no more factory ammo for me!

Keep an eye on the normal places like Midsouth shooters supply, Midway, and shooters pro shop. There are other places to go, but generally these are the places I hit up first...Looks like you are doing great on your reloading. Do you have a chronograph to see how fast/slow your loads are running?

No chronograph yet. It's on my list. I've been keeping an eye out at the usual online vendors. Need to check out a few more local shops, too.

Respect the loading manuals and don't be surprised if your rifle shows pressure signs under the highest load listed. Every rifle is different so always work your way up and take load advice from others with a grain of salt. Trust me, I learned the hard way 20 yrs. ago. Good job there.

That's good advice Dusty. I have a friend who is a major newbie and he comes up with some of the most off the wall bullchit. I ask where he gets his information from and it's always, "the internet".He lives 50 miles away so it's hard to help him in person. A few good loading manuals will do a person more good than they realize. Especially the first couple chapters where they discuss the "how to's of reloading" and step by step procedures..Most manuals also walk you thru finding proper OAL, without using the latest greatest (unnecessary) gadget wink and proper set up of your dies.

For years I've just fired .308 in my .358 to fire form it when I needed more cases.

FFemtRN5287: Congratulations on your results and the starting of a new dimension to your shooting life!
Handloading has been a needed and rewarding part of my life since I was 12 years old (that was 44 years ago now).
I had to teach MYSELF how to handload Rifle ammunition so I could partake of centerfire Rifle shooting at all.
My family was very poor and my father could not provide ammo for myself and my two brothers to shoot in our humble Rifles.
So I went about gathering brass and cheap military surplus powder and left over components from sympathetic older folks who did reload.
I started with 30/06 cartridges and literally had to miss my school bus home many days so I could stop by Stan Hickocks Sport Shop to ask questions and make notes.
I used the humble Lee hand tools and borrowed scales to make my first batches of ammo.
I also thank the many Gods I worship for getting me safely through that situation.
I have probably handloaded in excess of 100,000 rounds of centerfire Rifle ammo with (knock on wood!) nary a mishap or missfire to date.
I have saved a LOT of money and been able to shoot MORE and probably a little better thanks to my "hobby" - handloading!
Many happy returns of your first results.
Hold into the wind
VarmintGuy
