I have only shot it at paper but it seems to work just fine for that!

I used the Federal 45/70 300 gr load to take a whitetail buck in North Carolina a few years ago. I took the buck from about 50 yards. To say it dropped the buck in it tracks is an understatement.

I've only shot paper with it in my 13 inch Bullberry barrel on my Contender. Accurate enough to 100 yds. (farthest I've shot it). Knew when I squeezed the trigger.

.

In my rifles, the 350 and 400 grain cast bullets shoot better. On small white tails it probably matters little, but the heavier bullets with more bearing surface penetrate deeper and are more accurate. YMMV

yes i have used the federal factory load 300 grain speer hot core HP. they shoot very tight groups out of my guide gun and are very effective on deer. i shot a large bodied buck a few years ago at about 60 yards. the bullet hit him quartering towards me in the front of the right shoulder, went all the way through the shoulder, lungs and heart and busted a rib on the left side mid way back the body and was just barely under the skin. surprisingly enough the deer took off at a dead run right at me and veered to my right about 20 feet out and rolled to a dead stop. i use these interchangeable with the rem 300 HP's with equal effect. sometimes they tend to disintegrate if going through heavy bone, but not always.
