I am going to buy my little boy a Lee Reloading Kit for Christmas. This is the little kit that you have to pound the brass into the die to form the case and then you tap the bullet it. I used to have one in 30-06 when I was a boy. It will come with a scoop, but is there any way to know in advance of Christmas what powders will work for the .223 scoop? I know he will want to make bullets right away so I want to have powder, bullets and primers on hand. Just not sure what powders will be suitable for the scoop provided. I realize that info will probably be in the kit but figured someone here might know.

What size primers for a .223? I have never loaded for the round.

Hi. You need small rifle primers for the 223.

Almost any powder will work with the scoop, but it depends on which bullet he'll be reloading for. These are the powders they have listed for the 55 gr. bullet. If you don't have any of these, I would suggest that you buy a pound of Win748.

I assume you are talking about a Lee Loader. If so, the kit will tell you what powders work best with the scoop included. You might want to invest in a set of Lee scoops. They comes with a chart that tells you which scoop does what with a whole array of powders.
How old is your "little boy"?

He wanted to know "in advance of Christmas" which powders work with the scoop. I assume he's checking his powders for a compatible propellant, or will be buying a pound.

Everyone should own a set of Lee powder scoops. They're great for working up loads because of the sliding powder table. The list has almost all the powders available for reloaders.

Where would I buy a set of lee scoops? Do they have numbers on them to identify them? I can't remember what mine used to have.

That stuff can't possibly be good for anything.

(As I recall, a full scoop of H4831 and 140 A-Frames did the trick here.)

My Lee Loader has a #108 dipper and for bullets in the 40-55gr range it suggests I3032, I4895, I4064, I4320, and Blc 2.

I also would encourage you to get the Lee Scoop set if you have the spare money. If you don't have the money now they are fantastic, not just because you will have all the scoops but the slide rule powder table is fantastic and made my life far easier.

I started (and still reload) uses the Lee Loaders. On thing to consider for your little boy might be what hammer you use, many folks use those small non-marring plastic hammers but I found some young reloaders have trouble with them and work better with larger rubber mallets. More strike area I guess?
