Thank you. Now we have to call Dave Goose? I only know one other person that goes by the name of Goose, and she is cute as hell..unlike Dave.

Just a quick question, why do you guys choose the materials you do for the knives you buy.
The blades made of D=2 for instance, the chromium makes them tough and wears great but is brittle as hell.
I would rather sharpen the blade on a more forgiving knife.
But since its the end of hunting season and works slow I thought I might build a couple knives for myself.
I'm open for suggestions.

I owned a lot of blades over the years, some of them pretty nice. Sorta devolved on that and use a Case lock back for most everything these days. Little three inch blade has dismembered more hogs and deer than I can recall. It has a blade form a lot like Gee's and I like the way the point works into joints to pop them apart.
Slice 'n Dice compadres!
Be careful out there Goose...

Love the doggy porn, What breed is Rommel? Looks like the dog on Person of Interest (TV show), not a Shepard, bad ass though!!The "new" super attack pup
That second Snow Bunny made me retreat to the side room with T&L.

I'm open for suggestions. Jimbo, I got a D2 Enzo with a Scandi grind that gets wicked sharp but is very brittle due to the Scandi (and probably HT). That's one reason I like my Bark Rivers--Mike Stewart has got A2 down pat and combined with the full height convex grind makes for a pretty tough blade and edge. Also got a Enzo in O1 that is noticeably tougher than the D2 (as far as chippiness). Having said that, I just ordered a Dozier. He has made his rep with D2 and I'm sure with his HT and the hollow grind, it will be plenty tough (it better be, for the price!). Also, the high Cr content makes D2 damn near stainless so with a good HT and edge design, I think you'd be good to go. I'm not an abuser of my knives so most steels work well for me. I will say my CPM 3V is too much of a pain for me to sharpen compared to the others.
It ain't what you don't know that makes you an idiot...it's what you know for certain, that just ain't so...

Mojo,
Thanks, I'm thinking along the lines of S-7 with a 54-56 Rockwell. I'm sure it will stain up, but looks don't concern me, I can re polish it any time, but I'm thinking it would be tough as hell and still plenty friendly to the stone.
A-2 is stable and hard but to brittle for me to spend any time on.
No reason for CPM in my mind, to costly especially when "grain" is a good thing when used properly. Most knife makes save the material cost and have no idea how to use the grain to their advantage, heat treating with out knowing the grain direction has ruined many a fine blade.

I'm open for suggestions. I don't know what they're made of nor do I give a [bleep]. I just buy knives and if they sharpen easy and retain an edge well I keep it. If they don't I sell them. I have a Randall that is great. I have a Dale Howe that is great. I have a John Salley that is great. And of course my Bali-Dong is great. I have a Menefee on order and if it is not great I will place him on ignore. Travis

Now we have to call Dave Goose?
I had to go to a shooting school for 3 weeks. I of course out shot everybody else so I was awarded TOP Gun at graduation. Since I am officially TOP Gun I have insisted everybody call me Iceman. This hasn't gone over very well, but BGG agreed to call me Goose as it still acknowledges my amazingness as well as allows him to choose the nickname. Now if you'll excuse me, I gotta jump on the highway to the danger zone. Iceman
