None near you, my friend! We are currently catching crappie dead on the bottom in 27' of water -- through a foot of ice. Pineview and Mantua Reservoirs, Utah.

Hey RR,
What size crappie are you catching, anything of decent size? You must be pretty close to the middle of Mantua, I haven't tried anything close to 27'. I've been fishing about 8-10' of water towards the back of the lake.
best, joe

You are right: Mantua isn't that deep. The bite at Mantua has dropped off as it does every winter when the rotting weeds take all the oxygen out of the water.
The depths I mentioned are at Pineview. Most of the crappie at P'View have been "flyswatter" size. But a few bigger ones are starting to show up.

We usually get into crappie good in late feb and march on South Holston, but that's on the east side of TN.

I knew before i opened this it would be a bunch of souther boys. I'm going to nebraska in feb to ice fish. I fish douglas and cherokee in east tn. Never fished south holston, boone or watahga. We catch huge numbers on douglas and sometime big ones cherokee not lots but bigger averages. I want to head out the OPs way and fish kentucky lake and reelfoot. But reelfoot for bluegills not crappie. You guys fish under lights at night? Northen folks fish under ice hillbillys fish under lights in summer at night, you gotta beat the heat.

I fishing Truman Lake and Lake of the Osarks quite a bit in the spring and fall. I make short trip to the smaller local lakes when I can't get out for the weekend.
When the boat ramps aren't frozen up in Feb, we hit a couple of quarries, where depths go to 50-60ft. Crappie suspend around 25-35 ft deep. Takes a while to get a jig down that deep.

Your mention of the Suffolk lakes bring back a lot of memories. In the 60's & 70's I fished a lot in Prince, Meade, Western Branch & others. I fished Western Branch for bass & pickerel. Caught a few 7-8 pound bass back then. Used to be an area on Western Branch where a farmer kept hogs. We slaughtered bass during the spawn there on big shiners. Is the fishing still good?

Are you passing through Iowa on the way to Nebraska? Good ice fishing here. Check out a good local forum: http://www.iowasportsman.com/forum/index.php?forum=2

Still pretty good I think, some days better than others, but that is fishing. Western Branch has been noted for really big bream since I have moved here in 1990.
