Had my first animal done at the Taxidermist a Head and shoulder gator mount. It was around 1k. My question is it is being shipped to my house since I am unable to drive to get it. What is the customary tipping procedure for Taxidermy work? For my guide who was also my outfitter I did 20 percent on the total cost even though we where only a few hours into a two day hunt he did a good job and got me exactly what I wanted. I waited to tip until it arrives and I can see their work but from their rep and images of other animals I am sure it will look good. I intend to let them do a full body for me this season if I get on another tag. It will be a 12 foot target and probably a 5k taxi bill. I don't want to be cheap but am also currently disabled and swimming in medical stuff. It will be sorted out soon and everything should be fine and most of my costs covered but I am trying to be a bit guarded. They know of my situation but I also want to compensate them for their hard work. Anyway, general rule of thumb for a taxidermist would be good so I know going forward what is appropriate. I also feel slightly guilty that the guy who put me on the gator had he and his son process it at a charge and I didn't tip his son. I thought the twenty percent would be fair for them to divvy up however they saw fit but now I am second guessing.

I've never tipped a taxidermist. I paid them to mount my trophy. Whereas with a guided hunt, I paid an outfitter and then tipped my GUIDE.

If I thought the work really excelled or the Taxidermist went out of his way I would be glad to tip him although that generally is why he sets the price so a tip isn't common at least in my limited experience with Taxidermist?

I have only received a handful of tips from customers. The standard protocol is to tell your taxidermist you are in no hurry. Then wait about a week to start calling on a weekly basis. Once the taxidermist calls and tells you it is ready, wait another two weeks to a month to pick it up and pay the balance.

this tipping crap is out of hand. tip your wait staff and your guide if they do a good job. stop with all the tipping already. if you find yourself tipping everyone, you have too much damn money.

My tipping is done by drinking beer with my taxidermist after hours. If they help you hang your heads, dinner should be provided.

I'll tip mine Sunday because he's taking the time to drive my Eland mount to my home and help me hang it(to big to fit in my vehicle) he's not charging me for this service but I'll make sure I compensate him for his time and travel on a Sunday

Nope, I wouldn't tip unless he went well out of his way or beyond his normal routine or work-related tasks. However, I would spread the good word, refer other friends, and bring him/her more work.

Anybody who seriously concerns themselves with the adequacy of a Big 7mm for anything we hunt here short of brown bear, is a dufus. They are mostly making shidt up. Crunch! Nite-nite!

They delivered within 60 days of original estimate so I am lucky there. I only called twice and both times to discuss the mounting options. Glad I did because they had the finish as gloss after we discussed a satin finish. I paid the day they told me it was ready. I guess I shouldn't have tipped my guide as he was also my outfitter but he did deal with my million questions on the drive in and he guided me to an exemplary specimen for the area. Thanks for the help. As I said I want to treat them fair and not be THAT guy. I do plan to use them again for a large expense mount so I guess that is a way of thanking them. I will also advertise for them when the mount arrives.

Oh and for the record though everyone thinks Dan is the taxidermist at Pernell's his wife Mary is. Though everyone that approaches them at shows thinks it is his business. I have been pretty impressed with her portfolio. I am sure I will be as thrilled with the mount. Told the wife we where hanging it above the bed since the Trophy room isn't ready. Wonder what an 11 ft gator head hanging over the bed will do for my love life. Oh yeah we are married with soon to be three kids what love life

no the taxidermist charges enough, he went from 350 to 450 this year for a whitetail. I'll tip a guide, but the the taxidermy man
