The Model 71 I just purchased and posted on the reloading forum was used to take a moose. One shot with 200gr hornadys put him down in short order.Given the ranges, I prefer the 250 Barnes original, but that 200gr Hornady will certainly do the trick on elk I would think.

A good principle to guide me through life: “This is all I have come to expect, standard lackluster performance. Trust nothing, believe no one and realize it will only get worse…”

I have a 1948 vintage Model 71 Deluxe Rifle. Mine didn't care for the 200gr. Hornady so much. Best I could do was around 2.75 inches at 100 yards. Still brush adequate nonetheless. However the 250gr. Woodleigh shoots 1.5 or less out of my rifle. I have since stocked up on that bullet since once I find a load that works good in one of my rifles I tend to stick with it. Good luck!

I purchased mine in Dec 2011. Since moving to Missouri in Aug 2011 I had really wanted a good brush gun since all I have are model 70's figured a 71 was the right choice. I found mine, a Carbine NIB Browning. I shot it all spring and summer with the Hornday 200gr. 67gr of IMR 4350 gives me 2 inch groups out of a Lyman peep sight that I installed. My shots in Missouri will never be farther than 100 yards. It is that thick.

I really want to shoot the Hornady's side by side with some Swift A-Frames and see the difference shooting into water jugs.

Again hope you like allot of blood: Girth measured at 267lbs. 70 yard quartering to shot. Buck ran 60 yards and fell. Blood everywhere...
