It's been many years since I fired a 35 Rem. How does the recoil compare with the 30-30? I'm figuring it's fairly substantial, especially when thinking about a youth ( 12 year old ) new to hunting which is the basis for my question. He likes the levers and has shot my 30-30 (several times) and 45-70 (one time!). Thougts and opinions appreciated!!

Rifle Recoil Table

Recoil from the .35 Rem. is roughly 25% heavier than from the .30-30. Some kids can shrug that off, while others will complain. Best if you can let him try one out before buying. I'm a fan of the .35 Rem., but you want to be sure that the kid will enjoy shooting practice, and that he isn't developing a flinch due to recoil. Of course, if you handload, you could lighten those loads a bit for the young'uns.

I have several 30-30 and 35 rifles. I cannot tell much difference in the recoil, but I have been shooting for many years. If he can shoot the 30-30 confortably, he may not notice the difference after shooting the 35. With that said, it is amazing what a good, modern recoil pad can do to reduce percieved recoil.

My first centerfire rifle was a used Win Mod94 in 30-30. I didn't think it was that bad, but when I upgraded to the Marlin 336 in 35Rem, I was shocked. The construction, fit, and heft of the Marlin made it much more enjoyable to shoot. It seems that the Red Rider stock on the Win just made the recoil worse. . .

I can't tell the difference between a .30-30's recoil and that of a .35 Remington in similar rifles unless I've been loading a bit hotter for the stronger Remington 760. Then, there's some difference. I really like the .35 Rem in both a Marlin and Remington 760. One or the other seems always to be around as a backup rifle in most of my deer and elk hunting. Ward

What's that supposed to mean Walker? Tell the kid it is a 30-30 and hand him a .35. He wont know the difference. I dont notice the recoil at all with my .35 and never have. I've let a ten year old girl shoot it and she didn't complain.

I have a Reminton model 8 in 35 Rem. It probably weighs ten pounds and is full of springs and parts that slide. The recoil is noticably less than in a 336.

What recoil indeed. My son started his deer hunting career shooting my ancient M94SRC in 32 Spl. (curved steel butt), when he was 11 or 12. Never bothered him any, even with just a sweatshirt on.

Kid probably weighed about 65lbs then, would shoot that thing until I pried it away from him with nary a whimper.

I don't notice any difference between that M94 and my 336SC in 35 Remington, shooting 200gr Core-Lokts in the Marlin vs my 170gr Hornady loads in the Winchester. As was mentioned, recoil pads are much better now than years ago and still fairly easy to install, if needed.

Thanks for all your input folks. Picked up a 336C in 35 today, it had a Bushnell 3X9 scope on it, for $230.00. What a dream to shoot!!! My boy shot it and fell in love too. I told him he'd have to fight me for it now. What a gun. I might have to set my marlin and win w/ 26" octagon barrelled 30-30 and 45-70 aside for a bit! Again, thanks for the opinions!!!

..my pre 64 Win 94's in .32 special and .30wcf both kick more than my hot loaded 336RC in .35 Remington.

Puncher. what do you mean the kid has to fight you for it ?? Your mean, buy the kid a 35 Rem and tell him you think your going to keep it for yourself. Go buy another one and show him you guys are a father and son team. He'll love that. Besides at that price, you stole it. What an awesome buy. I never had a son, But my oldest daughter could out shoot me sometimes. OOPS!! Did I just say that out loud. I love it when a father can spend time with his child and show them all the things that we learned. Some day he'll out shoot you. ha ha ha

Hey Firearms.....I like the way you think!! Now I just have to figure a way to slide that one by the wife!! Back to ya on spending time with your daughter shooting, that's great---too many folks figure if it's a girl, why spend the time?? There's times I wish I had a daughter and was able to give them the opportunities with nontraditional interests many girls simply don't get. Oh well, guess we'll all work with what we have and be thankful!!! Adios
