Caseydog is a Long hair German Shephard. Not a "Gun Dog" so I did not use that forum to ask this question.
I am looking for a good Shear. Her hair is very think and heavy. Her coat is out of control. Simple grooming does not help much. Before when her coat got in this condition, the vet anesthetized her to trim her. It takes her 3 days to get over the anesthesia. She will not let anyone trim her without putting her under. She will let me do it. Shearing is about the only solution being that she is an active farm dog.
Any help on make/model of a good shear would be appreciated.

We've been using a cheap pair of Conair clippers for our dogs. Have had them a year or two and they're still going.

I did semi pro dog grooming for years, when we showed our Scotties. I used Oster Golden A5 clippers, and their detachable heads. Never a problem. Be sure to match the clipper head to the task though.

The brand you're looking for is Andis. Rotary-drive, so they are quiet and reliable. We've been using them on our wooly dog for a couple years now, after tossing the Osters that just wouldn'lt cut it.

I take scissors and shear my wifes yorkies down ,then use clippers to even it up. Paid $25 to get a damn good pair of scissors.

Well I have been doing the research. Never thought it was this complicated. It looks like a person needs to spend well over $175.00 to get a shear with good reviews. Still have not seen a review about shearing a dog of this size and difficulty. Most people complain about the motor getting hot. I'm telling you, Caseydogs coat would be a challenge. So far the upper end of both the Oster and Andis units "might" work. I just do not see any reviews that builds confidence. How about Wahl? Hell, I can buy a truck easier than this.

Oster is top of the line. You cant wear them out.I used to shear up to 500 llamas and Alpacas a season>Big tip clean all the sand and dirt out of their fur.Thats what dulls a blade!!
Its all right to be white!! Stupidity left unattended will run rampant Don't argue with stupid people, They will drag you down to their level and then win by experience

We use the high end Osters on one of our labs as he is covered in long thick fur with dense undercoat that makes him miserable in the heat.
If your worried about the clipper cost or having enough balls and not overheating do you know any horse people?
Maybe borrow their set as I guarantee that if your pup will tolerate it that her fur won't even slow a horse shear.

No worry on cost. I am not much on borrowing tools. I buy good tools. It helps that my wife is a Industrial Supply salesperson. Yea,I know---sexy isn't it. I will ask my vet today. Caseydog was there yesterday, but I did not have a change to ask him what he uses. I agree on the Horse shear. That is what I will do. Thank you.

we tried a couple of times with the cheap brand and it just didn't work.
Spent $225 on a pair at Petsmart and have used them for several years shaving two dogs about 4 times a year.
have you paid your dues, can you moan the blues, can you bend them guitar strings

Hah! She is no police dog, but she plays one on TV! A great companion, and always seems to know what to do around the farm. She is also my spell checker.

Bought a Andis AGC Pro with some extra ceramic blades. only had time to just test it now. It worked pretty good during the test.
Caseydog was looking at me and thinking--- WTF?
