It's called, "Military-Trained Snipers Share Their thoughts." It's a good read that I very much enjoyed. With the piece there is a photo of a bull elk with a cross hair plastered on his chest. Now I known this is just a depiction and not necessarily a recommended shot placement, but for the sake of conversation is POA a little high and too far back?

Hunter? Which mag is that? Figured you are not referencing petersons hunting...

Ten four, thanks. They don't sell that around here. Get the other two, but can't find successful hunter here.

Successful Hunter, like Rifle and Handloader magazines can be ordered in a digital format online. A good article, with great references to Shoemaker, Billy Sturver and Chuck Mawhinney.

Just a photo to catch your eye so you will read the article . Probabley just a Computer Generated Magazine Photo and not a actual photo in the bush

I didn't take the elk photo so don't know where it came from, but a good guess would be Yellowstone Park. Most wildlife photos in magazines are taken in parks. Dunno who placed the reticle, either.
Glad some people liked the article. Two of the three former military snipers mentioned post here on the Campfire.

I was struck by Chuck Mawhinney's choice of gear.
At a guess, I'd say he put about 3/4 of the cash value into the scope and mounts.
Otherwise, it appears to be a bone-stock factory rifle with a bedding job and, I'd guess, a little work on the trigger.
Interesting, and notice taken.

Which issue? I did manage to find the most recent successful hunter magazine, but it didn't reference any of the articles mentioned in this thread. Guess it's a previous issue....

tjm10025, I was struck by the same thought about Mawhinney' s gear. The other thing that all of them emphasized was their preference for stalking in for a close shot rather than banging away at long range. I enjoyed the article.

My Kid has a Rifle simular to that.Fugly looking but shoots light out!!! They figured out Tubb might have been onto something. Were some others before Tubb that did the chasis type rifles. I can understand folks wanting a gun to look like the old ones. Just like folks love old cars too. But I'll be danged, I could really give a flip less about looks, I just want it to be as accurate as it can be and reliable as heck. I"ve been known to rasp on wood stocks and then not like it and add bondo and rasp that until on a match rifle it fit right. I'd do the same on a hutning gun too. Its a tool, to me, no more no less.

That must have been the same editor who let Remington claim their M798 was a "double square bridge"
Whoever wrote that is probably a staff writer for Intermedia now.

I've been stretching the limits of rifles, cartridges and bullets, for nearly all my life and richly enjoyed John's article. As usual it's not full of a bunch of fluff but plain and simple common sense.
My avatar name is LDHunter which is Long Distance Hunter and although I've been at it a lifetime, almost all my shots at medium to big game are inside of 300yds.
Although I'd love to brag that I've taken maybe an antelope at a cool thousand yards (bucket list item), the hunter in me always wants to sneak in closer... LOL
Yet another great article John... Thanks...

That was a fun article...I enjoyed that! Mawhinney's gear made me chuckle A "stock" Ruger M77 7 Rem Mag,bedded, floated, with factory ammo that he says groups well.Interesting that the current technology he embraces is a great scope. I think we know at least two of those guys on here.

Savuti, It specifically says "Hathcock" at the bottom of column 2 page 30 and in the caption under the photo on the same page. I don't know where you got the "Hancock" from but IT IS NOT in this article.-Muddy
