I found a chrome moly Rem 700 ADL in 30-06 for $300. It's the Sports Academy model "G" prefix. Rifle is basically new with less than a box of shells through it. Any downsides to building on a CM action if it's going to be cerakoted or should I pass and look for a SS version?

I prefer cm actions. I think they feel smoother. I don't worry about corrosion much, I just keep my guns clean and oiled. One of the new coatings would answer that issue if you hunt in the weather much. I've also had better luck changing barrels using a cm/cm or cm/ss combination. SS/ss sometimes will gall. 300$ is a pretty good price for an action these days.

I see you are in Georgia, I wouldn't hesitate a second to do a CM build. I would go SS barrel if going custom.

The barrel is the primary part for which I prefer stainless.

I'm having one built now on a CM remington M700 action for a long range plinking rifle that's going to be cerakoted. However, if it were going to be a serious hunting rifle it would be a stainless action cerakoted or not, and I wouldn't be using a remington.

It all depends on what you intend to use it for, but my rifles I depend upon are stainless.

If you are coating it, then it doesn't matter.

The bolts of "SS actions" are generally CM. CM is a superior material for actions. It is slicker, not smoother. If corrosion is an issue, it can be coated, plated, covered etc. SS is a great choice for the barrel.

I will throw another wrench in. I think its a bad idea to build on a factory 700. There are quite a few remington clones out now. they require no work. In many cases truing of an action can make it worse. why go through the hassle and expense just buy a top notch action to being with. Your already looking at adding at least $600 for a barrel and someone to put it on, why not upgrade the action. Doing so will give you alot more pride in owning your custom. I have a worked over custom 700 but its just not as cool as my custom on a bat machine action. I would look at the defiance deviant or bat Vr pic action.

The late model Remington receivers are coming out very true. CNC machining? I have a few clones, but for a hunting rifle a factory Remington receiver, custom trigger,a good bedding job, and custom barrel will not miss the animal. Most all of my customs have CM barrels. They are just as accurate as a SS.

I'll probably never do another on a factory action if I'm starting from scratch. I'll rebarrel what I have, but going clone is a better choice when starting from scratch IMO.

I spent nearly as much as a clone on the purchase and truing of a 70s model 700 action once. After all the work I found the rear bridge was way off spec and the mount holes were slightly off center. I fixed it by going with some sig rings and a two piece base, but it was a waste of money and in the end I still had an old dicked up 700 action.

CM barrels aren't cost effective when you figure in having to get them blued.

I will disagree, but I think we can agree this is what a forum is for.

For less than half the cost of bluing you can have the melonite treatment on all the parts.........

Not starting an arguement, I am stating a fact. For example, Krieger charges $325 for a stainless blank -or- a chromemoly blank. So unless you are getting bluing for free, it costs more to use a chromemoly barrel.

If I spent my life hunting dry ass Texas I guess a CM would be ok. That said I see NO advantage in a CM tube, not one.

Oh, come on. Nothing like having to oil your gun after a long day of hunting simply because you brought a cold barrel into a hot house.

I realize you have a hard on for SS, but a CM shoots just as well and bluing or Melonite cost less than a SS. I hope you do know that SS corrodes also.
It really matters little to me personally, but why put this out to people that don't know.
My thoughts are if you put your rifle up nasty, you go to bed nasty.
