Saw it yesterday and it was pretty good, very good, actually, for a cheesy monster movie with a huge special effects budget. It definitely harkened back to the old original Godzilla style, except with multi-million dollar CGI instead of little tiny models and firecrackers. There was actually some character development before the monsters completely destroyed San Francisco which is rare in monster movies. The character development, that is, not destroying whole cities.
Bryan Cranston over acted his little heart out, probably a reaction to five years of dealing meth.
I felt sorry for Ken Watanabe you'll remember him as the head samurai in The Last Samurai. In every scene you just knew what he was thinking here I am, a serious Japanese actor, and I gotta frickin' say Godzirra! I hope they paid him a lot.

i saw it last night.....definitely worth seeing if you like monster movies/good CGI......special effects were well done and it was definitely a Godzilla movie unlike the last remake.....

I rarely go to the movies, but Godzilla was one of my favorites as a kid. May have to take the family to go see it. Rotten Tomatoes gives it 70%+, which is good for a monster movie.
And Godzilla has officially passed Beau Geste in the remake catagory!!!
The Gewehr 98's, artillery model Luger, and Thompson's really made last King Kong shine!
Would that be a monkey shine???

Godzilla vs Cloverfield would be a tough matchup. Id give the edge to Godzilla, though, since he has a secret weapon he breathes radioactive fire.
There is one thing that bugs me in these monster flicks. Now, knowing full well that you have to suspend reality to have a monster movie in the first place, theyre still flesh and blood, not alien super-alloy armor. In Cloverfield, they were dropping 500 pound bombs directly on his (her?) back. I dont care if his skin is 12 feet thick, thats gotta leave a mark.
Same in Godzilla the only thing 120mm armor piercing rounds do is get a monsters attention, which then means youre screwed.
And knowing that why in the ever lovin heck are the special ops monster killers toting M4s? Seems like their only use is to have a place to mount a flashlight. One guy up in the plane before the HALO jump is seen jacking a round in his M9. Right, thatll leave a mark on Godzilla. Maybe they thought there might be some gang bangers coming over from Oakland theyd have to deal with?
Oh, well, a complete disregard for reality aside, its still a good excuse to eat overpriced popcorn.

I saw it as well. It ain't art, but it's good fun and worth the money.
I kept expecting the young Japanese boy to get caught by Godzilla and carefully set down without harm, like in the originals. I guess that will be in the sequel.

Opening weekend box office was $196 million worldwide. Someone told me that there are now plans for a Godzilla II (or Godzilla 19 or something if you start counting from the original).
Amazing that a hokey Japanese monster can still pack'em in the theaters. The guy definitely has charisma.
