I was talking to my friend Nate Chesney who is the head honcho at Hillbilly Custom Rifles. He has reamers for the 26 Nosler as well as the case necked up to 270 and 7mm. From left to right are the 7mm RUM, 7mm Nosler, 270 Nosler, 26 Nosler, 7mm LRM, and 7mm Rem Mag. He hasn't chambered any rifles yet but I'll be anxious to see how the 270 and 7mm's perform. Nosler lists the 26 Nosler with a case capacity of 93 grains which puts in in the same leaugue as the 7mm STW and a little ahead of the 270 Weatherby. Should be interesting.

Those are going to be a great line of cartridges in the future.I can also see a .308 and a .338 added to that list. That shorter fatter case is just a little more efficient in the powder department.Loaded with the right powder, you will see some remarkable velocities. Also, they should function very well in a regular long action. The shorter case will allow you to long throat your rifle and seat your bullets way out there and still stay at mag length.

Won't the 7mm, simply be a copy of the 7mm Dakota???

I don't think so.The Dakota is 2.5" like the 7mag,this case looks to be a little longer.I saw some test results with over 3200fps with a 180gr bullet. That's a bit better than I can get with my 7STW.

If I were to put my energy and $$$$ into a new gun, I would look real hard at the 26 Nosler bumped to 28 Nosler.

I'm getting older and my back isn't the best. Thinking, I should use what I have in the safe. Put my $$$$ into a hunting trip.
A hunting trip does sound like fun.

Take care

The 30 Nosler would be very similar to a Newton - albeit a little skinnier.

If Barnes comes out with a 25 caliber LRX, I would be sorely tempted to turn my 257WBY into a 257 Nosler! Not that I have had any trouble with 100gr TTSX's (Moly'ed and from a 28 inch barrel) running 3800 on any deer sized critters.

I know that folks will almost always neck up and or down any new case, but I see the 26 Nosler as she sits as a pretty darned good all arounder for non dangerous game already. The somewhat slower 254 WinMag already had and has a stellar reputation as such, the new 26 is just more of a good thing.

One of the Savage F class rifles in 6.5/284 needs to be re chambered to this new 26 Nosler round. WOW, what an awesome long range 'beanfieled' or spot and snipe combo that would be! (If a bit heavy) and on the cheap, too.

It is always interesting to consider necking up (or down) a new cartridge case. The body diameter on the 26 Nosler is the same as the RUMs. It may not pass feed rails without modification with some rifles.

IMHO If the 26 Nosler brass is thicker than .014" it night not be worth trying. Remember the issues many had with the WSSMs?Some lots of Hornady 7 LRM brass are .0175-.018". The 375 Ruger brass I necked down to 7mm is .0175" thick. I believe the brass looses its ability to spring back for easy extraction on the third firing. Bolt lift is fine but there is difficult rearward movement of the bolt and brass. A shiny area is seen just forward of the belt.

Just talked with Mike at Nosler. He told me the wall thickness is of the 26 Nosler is .016" I mentioned the spring back issue and asked in their testing did they encounter any issues. He said no.

I will let others use this cartridge for a while before I consider trying it.

It's all about cubic inches.

If it's on a 700 why all the hoopla? Plenty of room in the box and feeding issues are zip with the STW case. I love the idea of the Nosler case and if it came first there would be little else but the fact is most fly 700 and the case length matters not. If anything the STW gets a nod for feeding....

Everything that can be thought up has already been done. None of these concoctions will do anything much better, but usually worse, than something that has already tried. New cartridge designs are more about marketing strategies than actual ballistic improvement or efficiency. Still, it's fun to play with new toys, until the toy box becomes full.

Why not just shoot the 7RUM instead of its chopped off wildcat 28 Nosler? what am I missing? Shorter magazine is all I can think of?

Or base the the round on the 338 ultra. Wouldn't have the burden of Federal/Nosler brass then.

What's the "burden" of Federal or Nosler brass?
