I just won a couple of auctions on GB featuring Marlin MR7s in .30-06 and .270. I did some reading on the net about them before deciding to buy them. They are both advertised in like new condition. Haven't received them yet though, to judge for myself. I was intrigued with Marlin's compilation of manufacturing ideas such as the Remington bolt and the Winchester 3-position safety among others. In the pictures they appear to have the classic lines. Just wondering if others on here own any MR7s and what is your opinion of them.

Introducing the new Marlin MR-7: America's favorite features, in one rifle

One big reason why Marlin rifles rank as America's favorites is that we listen to our customers. And when our customers told us that we should offer a bolt action center-fire rifle, we not only listened, we went to work. Our new Marlin MR-7 is the result.

Incorporating a wealth of features that have proven their worth among American shooters, the MR-7 is the culmination of years of research, development and field testing. We wanted to create a rifle that was as strong, smooth, accurate and reliable as any bolt action made, and judging from our test panels' responses, we have succeeded.

Our customers wanted a rifle with (A) a 3-position safety, (B) a bolt face encircled by three rings of 4140 steel, (C) a shrouded striker and high-visibility cocking indicator, (D) an adjustable 3-6 lb. trigger, (E) a forged, machined and heat-treated receiver and (F) an extra-strong bolt lockup, and (G) a hinged floorplate with a removable, yet securely mounted, 4-shot box magazine. They asked for a 22" barrel with 6-groove precision rifling and a recessed muzzle. And, they preferred a classically configured, cut-checkered American walnut stock, fitted with quick-detachable swivel studs and a shock-absorbing rubber butt pad.

The new Marlin MR-7 incorporates all these features, and has performance to match. Chambered for .30-06 Spfld. and .270 Win., it is capable of better than 1.5" 100-yard groups right out of the box (from a fixed rifle rest). The action is as slick as glare ice, and the rifle comes up to the shoulder in a smooth, natural motion.

Until now, if you wanted all these features you'd have to buy a half-dozen different rifles. Today, the MR-7 has it all, at a price lower than that of our major competitors' rifles, and with a 5-year limited warranty. But, as always, seeing is believing. Check out the new Marlin MR-7. It will be available from your Marlin distributor soon.

Fine rifle that just couldn't get through the 700 fog.

I've got one in 30-06. Nice rifle. It's much smoother to operate than anything else I have. Mine weighs 8.5#s with a 4-14 Nikon scope and Leupold bases/rings. Only thing I don't like is the grip is a bit thick. FWIW magazines are hard to find, but did find reference online that they are the same as the Browning Abolt, but have tried it yet.

"Thick" as in Sako palm swell thick? Also, why would one need an extra mag. Just a spare in case?

It seems well liked on the Marlin forum. It has some small problems that are easily fixed. I know one is the trigger guard is plastic and fails. A metal guard fixes it.

The two I had and shot were pretty accurate, I remember that.

The MR-7 was made for 4 years only, from 1996 to 1999. All were long action & the first year production offered in .30-06 & .270. The next year 1997, the .25-06 was introduced. Then in 1998, the .280 Remington was offered to the end of production in 1999, making this chambering the hardest to find of the 4 calibers offered. In 1998, Marlin offered a stripped down version called the MR-7B in .30-06 & .270, with a birch hardwood stock & a blind magazine. A few of the rifles were available with sights on the barrel, but these are fairly rare.
Also, the 1998 catalog introduced short action calibers .22-250, .243 & .308, but these were never produced.

The rifle was discontinued after 1999 when pending legal action over a patent infringment of the Browning style detachable box magazine persuaded Marlin to cease production.

I own a MR-7 in .280 and it is the most accurate, well made production rifle in my safe. The fit & finish was very well executed for a mass produced rifle and the Marlin barrels are to notch. I agree with the previous statement about the grip being a rather closed, full grip design. By the way, The Browning A-Bolt box magazine will not fit this rifle, and the factory Marlin Magazines are next to impossible to find. One was auctioned on GB awhile back for $125.00! To pricey for my taste.

I've never handled a Sako so can't say. I just know that it is larger around than my Ruger MKII and Rem 700. It is a detachable magazine with a floorplate. Though I rarely actually take mine out, it does come out and could be lost.

I bought one last year when I was actually in the market for an xl7 or the like. I'm very glad I bought this gun over the new manufacture $300 guns. It has good wood with a decent trigger. I shot a 1/2 inch group with federal blue box last year and I regularly shoot around an inch now. It is my loaner gun but probably doesn't deserve that status as it is a very capable gun. A friend of mine shot his first deer with it this fall and I see my kids putting deer in the freezer in the years to come.

I've had an MR7 in 30-06 since about 96 or so. I thought it was older than the article indicates. I like it just fine.

OR-OK how did it turn out for you?

Wow, this is an old one of which I lost track. Both rifles are quality. The. 270 is the only rifle I own in that cartridge. It is as nice as any mod 70 or 700. Definitely a keeper.

I do not remember a plastic trigger guard on an MR7.

The MR7 had a metal trigger guard, the current XL7 comes with a plastic one.
